finding dep. depmod: can't open lib/modules

howdy, can anybody tell me what i need to do here.. on boot I get...

Finding dependencies depmod: can't open /lib/modules/2.4.20-pre9/modules dep for writing.

My /lib/modules contains 2.4.19-4a

this is a fresh install from 2.3dayton cd on a 6100 nubus machine.
I was going to just leave it as is because the system is up and running just fine but now I seem to be having wierd problems setting up the iptables so I am figuring I should deal with this first.
