G5 ppc vs ppc64

Postby austenmc » 28 Apr 2005, 19:05

Ive got two G5s, both with YDL: one w/ a 4.0 install and one with a 4.0.1 install. I tried to upgrade the 4.0 system to the new kernel (2.6.10-1) with yum, and I get this error:

package kernel-g5-2.6.10-1.ydl.1 is intended for a ppc64 architecture
package kernel-g5-smp-2.6.10-1.ydl.1 is intended for a ppc64 architecture

On my 4.0 machine:
$ uname -a
Linux ... 2.6.9-1.ydl.8g5-smp #1 SMP Thu Dec 9 01:35:44 EST 2004 ppc ppc ppc GNU/Linux

On my 4.0.1 machine:
$ uname -a
Linux ... 2.6.10-1.ydl.1g5-smp #1 SMP Mon Feb 7 10:18:19 MST 2005 ppc64 ppc64 ppc64 GNU/Linux

Does "ppc" mean 32 bit kernel and userland "ppc64" means 64 bit kernel and 32 bit userland?

How do I switch my ppc system into a ppc64 system? Hand-build the kernel?
