Kernel Panic on installing YDL 4.0.1 on G5 PowerMac

Postby Jeremiah.Richardson » 02 Aug 2005, 16:08

I am having some problems getting YDL 4.0.1 installed on my new G5 PowerMac. If I try to do either an install-g5 text or a install-g5-safe I get kernel panics. I have seen someone else with this problem posting here:
http://lists.terrasoftsolutions.com/pip ... 19331.html

and here:
http://lists.terrasoftsolutions.com/pip ... 19298.html

However, there is no resolution to his problem. There is a link to a kernel patch, however, I am at a loss at how to try to get the kernel patched and on a CD so that I can install from it. The thread about the patch starts here:
http://ozlabs.org/pipermail/linuxppc64- ... 04129.html

Here are the details of this problem:
I am using a G5 Powermac with 2 GB SDRAM (PC3200) - 2 x 1GB and an ATI Radeon 9650 256Mbyte AGP Graphics Card. It has roughly 235 GB of HD and came preloaded with MAC OS X. I reinstalled MAC OS X and repartitioned it to half of the hard drive. I then boot from the YDL 4.0.1 CD and try either of the g5 text install commands (The graphical has the same result). It starts to load and then throws the following Oops, stack trace, and kernel panic.

i2c /dev entries driver
Oops: Kernel access of bad area, sig: 11 [#1]
POWERMAC
Call Trace: .create_iface (unreliable)
.of_device_probe
.driver_attach
.bus_add_driver
.i2c_keywest_init
.init
.kernel_thread
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Rebooting in 180 seconds..

Let me know any suggestions or ideas anyone may have.

Thanks,
Jeremiah Richardson
