No sound for 500 MHz White iBooks w/ YDL 4.1

I loaded YDL 4.1 on my 500 MHz iBook. This is the first generation of 500 MHz iBook with H/W modem. When I tested for sound, there was none. It appeared the sound modules loaded correctly. Files like /dev/audio was there.

I played with "kmix" and muted the items like DRC, PC Speaker and Auto Mute. I then unmuted the items and muted a few times. Now there was sound. The sound chip is "PoweMac Tumbler".

Here is the solution.

edit the file "/etc/rc.d/rc.local" and add the following lines:

Code: Select all
/sbin/alsactl -f /etc/asound.mute restore
/sbin/alsactl -f /etc/asound.mute restore
/sbin/alsactl -f /etc/asound.mute restore
/sbin/alsactl restore

To get asound.mute, run alsamixer and mute "PC Speaker", "Auto Mute" and "DRC" and hit the "M" key. Use the arrow keys to select the items.
Exit out of alsamixer and type the command :

Code: Select all
alsactl -f /etc/asound.mute store

This should take care of the problem.[/code]
