cant get better than 640x480x8bit color on iMac G3-600

Just installed YDL 4.1 on an iMac G3600. It has the ATI Rage 128 Pro Ultra. Originally, X wouldnt even start, because the VertRefresh was set to 75-60. When I switched it to 60-75, it then threw a "FBIOPAN_DISPLAY: Invalid argument message"

I changed the DefaultDepth to 8, and it starts, buts its ugly.

Anyone have a working (decent) config for a G3 with Rage 128 Pro Ultra?

After much googling and inferring from other PPC distros, I got 1024x768x16 non-accelerated video by doing the following:

edit /etc/yaboot.conf
set the append line to this:
append="video=aty128fb rhgb quiet"

run ybin afterwards to make the changes stick

After this, you'll get decent video.

I editted /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I set the Driver section to "r128" instead of 'fbdev"

I started up X again and managed to get 1024x768x16bit color. Very nice.

Hey YDL people, why does this kernel parameter not get set by default? 640x480x8bit sucks...
