no x server

k this is a little complicated.

i have a white ibook g3 600mhz, it has a video output plug that has the line- box-line symbol on it. i pluged that into a normal vga monitor. now during installation the only way i could see anyhting on the monitor was with install-safe. perhaps becasue on that option it uses generic video drivers.

i installed the system, rebooted and i saw the insteractive startup with my devices being initialized with the green ok's. after ethat i get teh log on screen in command line and it trys to move to x a few times (i can see the x pointer for the mouse but it goes back to the command line and then tries again....)

then i get a blue background + textual boxes (like i had in the install-safe option) and it tells me that i need to configure x and that i should reconfigure and then restart x.

i tried the xconf command i am used to but it doesnt work, how can i set up my grafical user interface.

by the way the normal laptop monitor doesnt work anymore, that is why i am using the external monitor.
