I followed the instructions here without any luck, but the instructions did start me experimenting with a few things. In the end I used the settings above but switched "radeon" for "ati" and I've now got 3D. I'm not sure this fix has been posted before, I AM a true linux newbie and I havent fully tested the fix apart from Chromium and 3D screen-savers, so I could be talking to the converted ... or much wiser. I'm not sure.
The only glitch I do get is after selecting a 3D screen-saver, and testing it, I get a square of inverted colour on the screen (random location). BUT, this does disappear after I open a command prompt. No problems in running Chromium, screen returns as normal. Oh, and when X starts the switch from pure CLI to X is distorted for a second, but comes good and gives me the usual (not distorted) login screen.
I hope I havent wasted time here.
Just an update, I tried this fix on the iBook after updating to Yellow Dog 4.0 (2.6.9-1.ydl.
and it doesnt work. Screen fails after running "glxgears". Still got a few things to try though. I havent installed any 3D app's or games, so I really cant say for sure, but the frame-rate in glxgears seems acceptable... not much load in glxgears though.
