made X11 (espcially opengl stuff like screensavers) much faster by editing /etc/X11/XF86Config

changed

Code: Select all
Driver "fbdev"

to

Code: Select all
Driver "radeon"

and

Code: Select all
#Load    "dri"

to

Code: Select all
Load    "dri"

then logout and restart X (ctrl-alt-del at the login screen) or restart the whole machine.

run glxgrears -info to get frames per second before and after if you want to compare.

backup your XF86Config before you mess with it

At least you got it to work on your system.

I have a 1Ghz Powerbook Ti, 15" as well - but the ydl installer won't work in graphic mode or text mode - only text-safe mode.. Then, when I get it all installed and try to make X work, I keep getting signal 11 errors..

I have tweaked everything I can think of - no luck.

Can someone who has successfully gotten X working on a system like mine, please post their XF86Config file? Thanks!

did you try running the X autoconfig utility and leaving the setting as thier defaults to just get it up and running and then change 1 setting at a time
Til our paths cross again

my /etc/XF*^Config for a titanium powerbook 15" 1Ghz

beware, i have fiddled with the mouse bit to try and get all the buttons working on a logitech mx500, but not had much luck.

3D on an old 366 iBook

Postby ibook366indigo » 20 Feb 2005, 00:53

The default install of YDL didnt provide 3D and enabling DRI only improved things a little. I followed the instructions here without any luck, but the instructions did start me experimenting with a few things. In the end I used the settings above but switched "radeon" for "ati" and I've now got 3D. I'm not sure this fix has been posted before, I AM a true linux newbie and I havent fully tested the fix apart from Chromium and 3D screen-savers, so I could be talking to the converted ... or much wiser. I'm not sure.

The only glitch I do get is after selecting a 3D screen-saver, and testing it, I get a square of inverted colour on the screen (random location). BUT, this does disappear after I open a command prompt. No problems in running Chromium, screen returns as normal. Oh, and when X starts the switch from pure CLI to X is distorted for a second, but comes good and gives me the usual (not distorted) login screen.

I hope I havent wasted time here.

Just an update, I tried this fix on the iBook after updating to Yellow Dog 4.0 (2.6.9-1.ydl.8) and it doesnt work. Screen fails after running "glxgears". Still got a few things to try though. I havent installed any 3D app's or games, so I really cant say for sure, but the frame-rate in glxgears seems acceptable... not much load in glxgears though. :?
