how to invoke 3d accelerator

hello everybody
ihave yellow dog 3.0
i install 3D games and i see a really bad picture i(not 3D)
i have reason to believe that the 3D accelerator of my screen card (ATI ragexl)
is not enabled
how can i enable it? and where do i enable it?
