X works fine for all users except root

Any problems with the Xserver, Configs or Sound.

X works fine for all users except root

Postby Guest » 30 Dec 2004, 09:36

Hello,

I just installed YDL 4.0 on Apple emac . I got X to work. On starting the machine, I get the GUI login. If I login with a normal user account, everything is ok. If I login as root, the machine just shutdowns. I have to press the power button to start it again, then it displays a message saying "restarting session" or something like that and immediately displays the GUI login screen again.

Any clues?

Thanks a lot!!!

What Desktop environment are you using? Regardless, you wouldn't wanna login to X as root anyway.

as DJ_Max pointed out you should never run in X as root, and if possible limit being root as much as possible (w/ root you have absolute control over the machine- this gives you the power to mess a lot of things up w/ just a stray command). With that said, im a little surprised that it would kick you out completely like that; mine doesnt but I'm running windowmaker and not kde or gnome.
Til our paths cross again
