PLEASE HELP!

Postby shaunvxc » 07 Aug 2010, 03:00

Okay I succesfully installed ydl on my old imac G5 ppc earlier this summer and everything was working great....until just now! I'd been working away at project euler problems all day, and I was really in the zone when for some reason I thought it would be awesome to configure a second monitor. So I got the VGI adapter made by apple and hooked up one of my old old monitors (samsung SyncMaster 712n), and went to the display settings and selected dual monitor. I configured the second monitor as a standard lcd with a 1024 x 768 display. I then hit enter and it told me I would have to log out and back in for the settings to take place. I did so, but right after I logged out, the screen went black and remained that way. I figured I would just restart the computer. WHen I restarted, the boot process looked completely normal (the display looked fine) but after the booting process finished, the screen again went completely black and the login screen never appeared. Panicked, I then restarted the computer (this time without the second monitor hooked up to the imac), and to my horror, after booting finished no login screen appeared, just a black screen. I'm guessing this has something to do with the display, but the graphical boot process is displaying fine, and everything appears to be working, until the boot finishes! Any help would be much appreciated! Please!

Are you able to get to the text-only console after it boots to the black screen using Ctrl-Alt-F1 (whatever the equivalent is for that on Mac)?

I just tried it, the boot process once again was displayed perfectly, the black screen appeared when it finished booting. I tried control alt f1 and control-applekey f1, neither did anything.. im at a loss!

Which version of YDL are you running, and do you have the install disc handy? I believe YDL 5 had an install rescue option, not sure about 6 though.

and if it means anything, when i clicked apply settings to configure the dual monitor display,
a window popped up that said:

rewrote '/etc/X11/xorg.conf '

at least I'm pretty sure thats what it said, through doing some research i have found that this might cause the type of problem i have described.

though i might be wrong about what the window said exactly but I am pretty sure that is what it said.

OK, at the prompt before YDL starts loading, press TAB once to bring up the kernel boot option and add a space and a 3, then press enter. That should boot you to runlevel 3 which is text only. Then log in as root and enter:

Code: Select all
Xautoconfig

Code: Select all
reboot

Assuming YDL was properly installed and functioning such that you could dual boot between OSX and YDL. When for whatever reason this ability is lost, one quick way to access the Linux or YDL partition is to "shoot the Parameter RAM" which requires pressing 4 keys simultaneously the option-Command-p-r keys until you hear your Mac chime. Note that what I'm calling the Command key is marked on some keyboards as a 4 lobed clover like symbol. More complete directions are available here. The directions I referred to describes what I call the Command key, the APPLE key, because in that era Apple keyboards had the Apple symbol placed there. If you have a Windows keyboard however use the key to the right of the option key, whatever it is.
