X11 won't start! no GUI login

Postby ramislander » 06 Apr 2005, 20:55

I'm pretty new to Linux, and a little less new to Unix, but I've been stuggling long enough with X11 to have a little understanding of how things work. I'm on a 15" g4 1.5 ghz powerbook, running YDL 4.0

The problem is that whenever I boot up, I get a text login screen that blinks a few times and then goes to a window that says I've got an outdated version of X11, which is not true. I tried startx, and auto configuring it. It just tells me to restart once I've reconfigured my GMD. Nothing works. I reinstalled YDL and changed something which made it worked, tweaked the XF86config file to get 3d acceleration, and that brought me back to square one. I can't remember what I changed before to make it work. When I try to open the config files on command based, it says "Permission denied". I'm logged in as root and sudo does nothing. I looked at the X11 folder while on MacOs, and the XF86config isn't there, and I can't edit anything in the folder.

PLEASE TELL ME WHAT IM DOING WRONG!!!

sorry, fixed my own problem. I'm pretty sure its that you can't install Gnome and KDE at the same time.
