HOWTO install the new version of Xorg

Postby autocrosser » 11 Jun 2005, 16:11

This Howto is from Joseph Sacco, Ph.D---with updates included---GREAT way to use the more curent video drivers available :) Make sure you DO READ the readme with Xorg before you "really" start the build---

How To build CVS without removing or overwriting an existing install

Create a directory that will house your new Xorg-cvs build, I used /opt/Xorg-6.8.2 --you should create a directory with an informative name, preferably one that includes the release number.

From a safe place like /usr/src/ pull down the cvs version of Xorg. The source will be placed in a directory called xc:
$ cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@cvs.freedesktop.org:/cvs/xorg login
CVS password: <hit return>
$ cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@cvs.freedesktop.org:/cvs/xorg co -P xc

Create a host.def file in xc/config/cf by copying the file xorgsite.def to host.def then edit host.def to add any of the following build options.
#define ProjectRoot /opt/Xorg-6.8.2
#define NothingOutsideProjectRoot YES
#define DefaultGcc2i386Opt -O0 -g
#define HasFreetype2 YES
#define HasFontconfig YES

The first line will cause Xorg-cvs to be installed in the directory /opt/Xorg-6.8.2

The second line will specify that the entire build be there and nowhere else.

The third line will add "debug-ability" to your build.

The fourth will use your installed version of Freetype2.

The fifth will use your installed version of fontconfig.

Backup or move your /usr/X11R6 directory. Backup /etc/X11. This step is purely for caution's sake, since everything should be built in (and only in) the build directory you specify in host.def.

Make /usr/X11R6 a symbolic link to your build directory.
ln -s /opt/Xorg-6.8.2 /usr/X11R6

You should not need to change anything in /etc/X11 as Xorg-cvs will likely work with your existing xorg.conf file with some editing.

Enter your source directory (in this example /usr/src/xc) and build Xorg-cvs by issuing the command;
make World

If the build finishes install it to /opt/Xorg-6.8.2 by issuing the command;
make install

The old keybord driver is depricated. Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change the section that looks like:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "Keyboard"

to
Section "InputDevice"

Identifier "Keyboard0"
Driver "kbd"

To enable Composite add this to your xorg.conf file:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

Restart Xorg.

To update to the latest CVS, from within /usr/src/xc
$ cvs -d :pserver:anoncvs@cvs.freedesktop.org:/cvs/xorg login
CVS password: <hit return>
$ cvs update -dP

To build only the components that have changed in xc issue:
$ make Everything

Three further notes--

Postby autocrosser » 12 Jun 2005, 07:46

Almost forgot three items :oops:

1: You will need to edit your XF86Config file or have Xorgconfig build a xorg.conf file for you--I used the config (see the readme or goto the release notes at Xorg) to build a "basic" .conf file--then I used it to modify my XF86Config in the correct areas--fonts, modules and device options change (be sure to save a old copy of your XF86Config just in case :wink: ). I can post my modified XF86Config if anyone needs to see the differences. Xorg will first look for a xorg.conf then look for a XF86Config--so make sure you are ending up with ONE conf file--You can choose which one---

2: If you update via CVS, you will be getting 6.8.99 (almost the 7.0 branch)--seems to work OK so far--had minor gliches with runlevel 3 -- no problems with runlevel 5

3: If you run into a build error with evdev---

I am including the complete replacement--pull the evdev file into your favorite editor and paste this over the whole file--- Ignore this if your build is "clean"

Cheers!!
Dean
