Is Yellow Dog *the* distrobution for me?

Postby hylke » 04 Dec 2004, 12:04

Hello
I'm looking for a distribution that is:
    * stable
    * has the 2.6 kernel
    * Much and good working libraries
    * Nice development enviorment
    * A good gaming enviorment(so i don't have much problems installing nvidia and things like that)

So far i only know that yellow dog has 2.6 kernel.
But what about the other things?
Thanx Hylke

I testify it *is* super stable. I got YDL to crash once in nearly 3 years and I am, the user, the one to blame: I gave way too much priority to 'X' via renice utility, leaving next to nothing for the system tasks so kaboom.
YDL4 is, indeed, FedoraCore 2.2 running on PPCs so much for the libs... :-)
Well, you know Macs and games have never been real friends. Now Linux on a Mac to play games? "Dude, get a dell" Linux on PPC is a penguin in sahara...

But instead of influencing you with my opinions and such, what about test driving it yourself on my computer from your computer via VNC? Contact me in private and we can make a arrangment, if you wish.

Word of warning; you unfortunatly wont be able to pull any 3d support for nvidia cards on a ppc system; the ones included w/ the xserver are 2d support only (nv) and the official ones from nvidia are x86 only

Outside of that yes, Yellowdog is really stable and unless you go screwing w/ things you're not quite so sure about you really shouldnt get any kernel panics or anything like that. It also includes all of the dev kits for X, kde, gnome, and just about everything else it uses.
Til our paths cross again

yes it is all except though that there aren't the best video drivers for ppc systems like macs for gaming
