Got my second PS3 today!

Postby billb » 08 Oct 2008, 19:28

:mrgreen:

I got the 80GB model with 2 USB ports, no card readers, and no PS2 game compatibility, but for what I want to do with it that should be OK. Will be installing YDL 6 on it, of course, and there are some PS3 games I'd rather not play "around the family" like GTA IV, for example.

Since I don't have another TV or monitor with HDMI I'll need to hook it up to my HDCP compatible projector using an HDMI -> DVI cable -- I ran my 60 GB PS3 like that for a while, and really enjoyed playing the games on the big screen (4:3 140" diagonal).

Ugh ... I have to crawl under the house today to run some speaker wires to the sound system located near where the new PS3 is going ... there's always so many tracks in the sand from creepy-crawlies under there, but I never see the creepy-crawlies. :lol:

EDIT: got'r'done, and none of the creepy-crawlies were in sight :D

Mythbusters

A question has come up occasionally on the board where users believe they have permanently lost space on their PS3 by formatting the drive and allotting 10 GB for the Other OS. On my new 80 GB PS3, before doing anything at all, I can confirm that the amount of space initially reported is 64 GB out of 74 GB free. After updating the firmware from 2.36 to 2.43, the free space is the same (as expected). Doing a quick format and allotting 10 GB for Other OS, the free space reported is 55 GB / 74 GB. Quick formatting again and giving all the space to the Game OS returns it to 64 GB / 74 GB.

No Warhawk game sharing

Postby billb » 09 Oct 2008, 15:28

Looks like I have to get another copy of Warhawk if we (friends or my wife and I) want to be able to play on both PS3's at the same time, though I could install it on this new PS3 under the same account name. I have the download version. But then I wouldn't be able to play it on the other PS3 for 24 hours. Eww. I wasn't expecting this, but it's no big deal, I guess.

Having two PS3's in the house opens up a lot of options for multiplayer gaming. When Home comes out that will be interesting ... :mrgreen:

I wonder what might happen if you bought two Playstation Eye cameras, hooked them up to each of your PS3s, turned on video conferencing, and then pointed the cameras and screens at each other? You might end up creating a small black hole, from which nothing could escape!!!! Don't do it billb!!! :lol:

Cheers,

Installed YDL 6 on the new PS3 now... I noticed that on a fresh install without doing anything and booting back to the Game OS, the Dualshock 3 wouldn't connect over bluetooth until I rebooted the Game OS. I think I'll remove bluetooth support completely from this PS3 until this problem is resolved.

Anyway, my first steps after installing:

* switch to Gnome instead of Enlightment at the login screen by clicking on Session
* switch to non-bordered video mode in /etc/yaboot.conf (131)
* add fedora-extras.repo and ps3bodega.repo
* add protect=1 to yellowdog-base.repo, yellowdog-extras.repo, and yellowdog-updates.repo
* yum install yum-protectbase
* yum erase bluez-libs bluez-utils (get rid of bluetooth support)
* disable screensaver in System->Preferences
* yum update
* System -> Preferences -> More Preferences -> Sessions: disabled gnome-volume-manager, gnome-power-manager, bt-applet, puplet
* Started disabling services (thinking I'll keep printing support on this one): cpuspeed, isdn, mcstrans, mdmonitor, mouse-emulation, pbbuttonssd, pcscd, restorecond, sendmail, ip6tables, auditd, acpid, atd, anacron, smartd, yum-updatesd (all disabled in both runlevels 3 and 5)
* Added the noatime mod to /etc/fstab
* Moved everything from one Gnome panel to the other and deleted the unused panel

Still more to do ... but that's a start! :D
