I hate being a NOOB

Postby ukee1593 » 18 Feb 2009, 10:21

When I found out that my PS3 could run an operating system was the first time I had even heard about Linux
i knew how to do most things on Microstuffed OS but now I know nothing about this
And I don't like it :x

How many other people are in the same boat

Not me - I've been using Unix since...well... 1987. YDL Linux is pretty easy in comparison.

The key thing about Linux compared to Microsoft Windows is customization. If you're somebody who likes to tinker around, there's nothing like Linux. You can do anything you want - if you have enough time, knowledge and a little bit of programming skill.

Everything in Linux is flexible. Don't like C programming? Then don't use it - use Perl instead. Or Java. Or python. They're all there - easily available - and free. Don't like your E17 desktop? Then don't use it - load Gnome instead. Or Xfce. Or KDE. Or Fluxbox.

Anything you can think of in Linux you can do.

However - Linux doesn't hold your hand. If someone writes a program - it's up to you to find the bugs. Heck - it might even be up to you to fix them.

For me, Linux is like being handed the keys to a home-built car. A car that you can change in any way you like.

Windows is like being handed the keys to a hermetically sealed car. Sure - you can change a few things here or there. But - everything under the hood is kept under lock and key. You can't change anything in there - you can't even know what's in there.

Windows is a good, general purpose Operating System. It does what it does reasonably well. Support is good - there are a lot of people writing applications for it. (Heck - I even earn my living with it.) For most people, they need look no further.

But - since the core is closed source - you can only change it to a certain extent. This causes folks to give up digging deep into an operating system, and forces them to learn only at a surface level. Linux rewards the curious. The deeper you look, the more you learn about computing and operating systems.

I'm truly sorry Linux isn't your cup of tea. Nothing I say here will probably change your mind. But - don't assume all of us are unhappy here. For most of us on this board - this is where we want to be.

Cheers,
Paul

sorry about that. I was having a bad day with the Linux on my PS3. It doesn't know what ./configure is and says that the directory doesn't exist. After Wicd broke I have to use the inbuilt network manager which looses my wireless connection about every 15 minutes.

I think in my inexperience I broke part of YDL on my machine and I fear that I'm facing a reinstallation.

Maybe YDL isn't such a brilliant OS for a NOOB like me to start on. Therefore I will probably try fedora 10 on my windows computer.

What you did say has changed my mind. Do you know of any tutorial sites that I could use to get up to speed with using and tinkering with a Linux OS.

Oh well when I get home I will be making a fresh install on my PS3 and use a fresh attitude and see if I like Linux this time round.

cheers, Luke

Don't worry, your not the only noob out there...I've played around with linux before, but I've never played around with the programming side of it. So Im a noob...I used to like windows until I started messing with Linux. I originally had Ubuntu (8.x something or other) on my desktop computer, then got my ps3 and put ydl6.1 on it. Im trying to make the best of my ps3 with what linux has to offer, which windows doesn't come close to doing. Luckily we have people here who are willing to help us noobs out when we have stupid questions :p

Pick up a copy of the Linux Bible.

That's what I've been using to self-educate myself about linux.

You can track one down on Amazon going for less than $1.50 for the 2008 edition.

Got my 2008 Linux Bible in a day or two ago (including the CD & DVD) -- looks very comprehensive. It even includes a short chapter on Yellow Dog Linux, though it focuses on YDL 5.0.2 and Mac hardware.

Yep, that was the "bait" I swallowed too. But in hindsight, I appreciate the core linux info to the book now, than just the glancing overview of the different flavors of linux.

Since it is advertised as the "bible" I understand why the author did that though.

I've found the book of more value for the linux commands info, server set up info, etc. than the disto samplings.

Hope you find value / use to your book, Billb ... I do !

It's certainly worth more than the $5 I paid for it! :D I also have "Linux Administration A Beginner's Guide" by Wale Soyinka (Fifth Edition) which has been very useful so far. The price is still up around $25 for that one, though.
