Sony lowers the cost of the PS3 dev kit to $2000

Hi everyone,

Saw this on Engadet:

It references this Ars Technica article:

Of note for us is this:
"What's more, Sony promised enhanced technical support for developers, an optimized PS3 compiler (SNC PPU) to improve efficiency, and better documentation for PhyreEngine, the company's free-to-use graphics engine that supports both OpenGL and Direct3D. In general, the announcement featured a lot of verbal commitment from Sony on behalf of developers."

This model looks like a PS3 and is only $2000.00 US. I wonder if it runs YDL? :D

That's quite a bargain compared to the dev kits original price of $10,250.00 for a unit that resembles a Betamax.

One of the commenters in the Ars article was complaining how bad Eclipse ran under Fedora on the PS3. I'm tempted to respond, saying he should try Eclipse on YDL6.1 running fluxbox. Or better yet, code with vim/emacs.

Probably won't help us.

only 2 usb ports? You'd think they'd base it on the deluxe 4 port model I don't remember if any of the previous TOOL's and DEV boxes could run commercial games. I remember reading that at least one couldn't, because it didn't have the proper BD keys. It would be cool to have one, even if I never coded the thing...just because.

Well - if guess if users are willing to spend $2000 for this - they can no longer complain about the $399 of the standard PS3. ;)

I still want one, though. :D

But it does so much! PS1, PS2 AND PS3 games. Video on disc and on storage devices, same for music and images. Netfront in GameOS, Linux, officially supported and you don't have to spend $200 on a kit. Which I just realized made my kit cost as much as my PS3. See? the PS3's cheap, a bargain, a steal. I want 2 more, why 2? One for the living room, and one to sit next to mideel with the majority of the drive dedicate to GameOS and not Linux. They'd have to be fully backwards compatible models. Aint no way I'd get a PS3 without it. @#@#$@# Sony.

I still want one, though. :D


Of course. Maybe you could convince SarahE at SCEE to comp you one. :-) All that work you put into building Firefox and Thunderbird for the PS2 is worth that. :-) Besides you could actually code on it and get good use out of it.

According to THIS SITE, the Tool has 512MB of XDR RAM. And a second internal HDD.

Here's the official Sony press release:

It's unclear if this new model - the DECR-1400A - shares the same specs as the original Tool - DECR-1000A - which you're quoting above. For instance, it would seem to me that you'd be hard pressed to fit a second internal HDD in the standard PS3 form-factor.

It will be interesting to see what these new dev kits are like.

No doubt, even if we can only wish to own one.

There have been significant changes to the physical layout of the PS3's chassis since its public debut. Notably the re-orientation of the installed HDD on the latest models. It was rotated 90 degrees and now slides directly out of the chassis. My 80GB CECHK is constructed this way.

Even with that said though, I highly doubt the new (cheaper) tool has a second HDD. Although the additional RAM probably still remains, as I would imagine development stage code could be a bit bloated and unwieldy.
