U.S. Air Force PS3 Cluster

Postby ppietro » 09 Dec 2009, 20:34

Hi everyone,

Looks like the U.S. Air Force is a big fan of PS3 Linux/OtherOS:

and
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/ps3-air-for ... -5297.html

They currently have 336 units - and are looking to buy 2200 more.

And - they're not looking for the Slims either. This might make the phat PS3s a little less easy to find. ;)

Cheers,
Paul

Oddly enough I recently read another news article about a government agency buying "old" PS3's, though not near as many ...

Hmmm, think I stumbled on the "why" of Sony killing the PS "Other OS" .... by removing the ability to cluster them using Linux, the US and other countries cannot have low-cost supercomputers. But they seem to be be keeping them at-home for japanese national uses . . . .

From the look on the screen, they seem to be running Fedora linux.

Here's a You Tube link that kinda tipped me off on this development :

The PS3 portion begin about half-way thru the video.

Not sure what you're getting at here ... the video shows a cluster of "old" model PS3's, and the closeup of the screen at around 2:50 is probably an x86 Linux box (since it has an icon for Adobe Reader on the desktop and there's no Linux PPC version of that).

Yeah, the PS2's/PS3's in clusters are headless so most of the time they use a Red Hat/Fedora/Centos X86 box to shell into them as necessary. Sure, they could use yet another PS2/PS3, but they're put to better use adding to the power of the cluster itself.

I wonder what the NCSA ever did to their PS2 cluster when they finished using it. Those PS2's (and their HDD's and RTE discs) would be quite valuable on ebay.

Here's an image of a wall-full of phat PS3's making up a cost-effective supercomputer ( probably why Sony killed off the phat PS3...every one could have a super-computer with enuf PS3's. )
