Is Search working?

Any ideas to make to board even better? Tell me!

Is Search working?

Postby ppietro » 23 Aug 2008, 23:30

Hi everyone,

When I do a search - say for "kernel 2.6.25.4", I get this message:

The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: kernel 2 6 25 4.
You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards.

That seems like a bogus error message to me. And - even if it's not - I think I need to see those posts anyway.

Cheers,
Paul

It appears to be working for some searches ... like if I search for "snes" or "black border" I get results ...

I see there's a setting for this in the admin control panel:

Common word threshold:
Words which are contained in a greater percentage of all posts will be regarded as common. Common words are ignored in search queries. Set to zero to disable. Only takes effect if there are more than 100 posts.

Currently it is set to 5% ... maybe it should be changed... :?:

Yeah - let's change it. Here's why. :)

I use the search function to look for my previous posts on certain topics. For example - I previously posted a detailed explanation on how to create multiple boot profiles with yaboot.conf. However - even though I'm using my name as a filter, which would limit the output to maybe 5 or 6 posts - due to this setting, I still can't search this topic. I get the common words error instead. This makes it really hard to browse my back catalog, since I have to think of odd words I may have used in my posts - instead of the topics they're about.

This is a direct change from the old behavior of the site, and makes it harder for me to respond, since I'm basically fighting the search engine. :)

Cheers,
Paul

Currently I have it set to 0 to disable, but it doesn't seem to help when attempting to search using the keyword "kernel" ... do you see any difference? Also tried 100% but it didn't seem to change anything.

I did notice a difference this afternoon. I tried a yaboot.conf search, and it was better. But - it doesn't work now. Is it back to where it was?

Still at 0 for disabled now, and before that I hadn't changed it from 5.
