Yes.

P.S. You're measuring this from the GameOS side, right? If so, this is to be expected. The PS3 uses some of the hard disc to cache system files for faster loading. See our conversation here:

Is it true that the 80 gig will be discontinued? If so do you know what will replace it? I'm buyying a PS3 soon and need backwards compatability, so should I still get it? Sory if spelling is bad, typing this from an iPhone.

Backwards compatibility? Which backwards compatibility? PS1 or PS2?

If you're looking for PS2 backwards compatibility - that boat sailed, my friend. No current PS3 models are PS2 backwards compatible. However - all PS3 models are PS1 backwards compatible.

As for the 80 gig model - that's not the original "80 gig" model.

In the US/North America, the first models were 20 gig & 60 gig - these had PS2 emulation in hardware (EE+GS). Then, the next North American model was the 80 gig with hybrid PS2 emulation - EE was emulated by the Cell, but the GS was still in hardware.

Then - we got the 40 gig "price reduced" model. This model reduced the 4 USB ports to 2, removed PS2 back compatibility and eliminated Super Audio CD playback.

All current North American PS3s are based on this 40 gig model - including the current 80 gig & 160 gig models. The 80 gig unit being sold is the 40 gig motherboard and layout with a bigger drive.

I haven't heard any reliable sources indicating that Sony is planning to ditch the 80 gig soon. If they do - they'll probably just put a bigger drive in it.

Cheers,
Paul

One could of course opt to simply replace the current HD with a bigger one you buy from your local HW reseller. Note you must inform yourself of interface and size restrictions regarding this new HD.

youtube/search ps3 replacing harddrive.

hope this helps.

One helpful forum tip: Be sure to check the last posting dates when you answer questions. The last post in this thread was done July 12 2009. At this point, you can consider the question dead and gone. (In fact, we may have answered it more thoroughly - we lost some forum posts about that time.)
