lmao so I'm guessing that means there is nothing that I can do about it. But it's ok bc I can still run the shell via PuTTY, and that is the biggest thing, bc like BillB I also run on a projector and I don't like turning it on and off all the time just to play with yum and stuff for a little bit.

Some normal advice now. Make sure you've opened the firewall on the PS3 for VNC - it blocks all servers but SSH by default.

You might check and make sure that Vista isn't blocking it either. If you use the default Vista firewall, you're fine - but if you've loaded a stronger one, you'll probably have to open that up to VNC traffic as well.

Cheers,
Paul

I need a little help, I can get this to work locally flawlessly, but I cannot get this to work remotely for the life of me, i tried almost every combination of ip and ports, Im sure its something simple, but I must have missed it. :?:

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get it working remotely either, but it has been quite a while since I spent any time working on it.

Do you think it will work without putty and ssh? Or is that not a good idea? I can only test remotely once a week...

My next attempt will be without putty, ssh, and the addition of 5900 to the ydl firewall. The vnc documents mention putting the server into "listening mode" but that option may not exist.

Probably not a good idea, but I guess it depends what you're using it for. The free edition of VNC lacks the "128-bit AES Session Encryption & Tamper-Proofing" that the pay versions have. There are trial versions of those, however.

There are open source and free VNC versions that have SSL support. x11vnc server does (which is what I'd use on the PS3 end), as for a viewer I'd recommend the enhanced TightVNC viewer (SSVNC)

I know I got this working some time ago as mentioned on page 1. However, I just went from YDL 5.0.2 today to 6.2 and am wondering if all this still works the same before I try setting it up again? I remember it working great locally and remotely for me when I did it under 5.0.2. I noticed someone mentioning 6.2 using tsclient instead of VNC in another thread? Any word on that? Thanks
Back on the attack after using 5.0.2. Ready to get this 6.2 up and running!

Hi guys. I haven't been on here forever since sony removed YDL. :-(
However, I'm happy to say I learned a lot here and some of the skills have carried over to my latest xubuntu linux load. I just got xrdp working over ssh by basically using tips from this guide. I'm forwarding xrdp instead of vnc over ssh and it work just the same! So far on my local network it's nice and fast. Can't wait to see how ti works from remote connection. :D
