IMPORTANT NOTE

The "Open Platform feature" is not available for the CECH-2000 model (the "PS3 Slim"), so you cannot install YDL or any other Linux on that or later models. Sony has indicated they will continue to provide this feature on older models and that this feature will not be disabled in future firmware releases. (reference link)

EDIT: Unfortunately, Sony apparently changed their minds about OtherOS support and removed it from firmware 3.21 and up which is a required update if you want to get on PSN and if you want to play some of the latest PS3 games. See this topic for more details:

What version to install
YDL 6.2 is the latest version available and provides the best support for the PS3 yet. Be sure to review the known issues section at the end of this post before installing.

Known Issues:
If anyone knows of a fix for any of these issues, please post and I will update the list.

* You can't currently use the Sixaxis controller or other bluetooth devices on YDL 6.2 for PS3 without updating the kernel. The stock kernel for YDL 6.2 does not include support for the PS3's USB bluetooth host controller. An official kernel update fixed this problem -- after installing the latest updates (yum update or let automatic updates install) you should be able to use bluetooth devices, including the Sixaxis, on YDL 6.2

* Sixaxis / Dualshock 3 doesn't work in Game OS / XMB after installing YDL 6.1 -- see here for fix:
http://www.yellowdog-board.com/viewtopi ... 352#p24352 -- RESOLVED in PS3 FW 2.70!

* Gamepads are not working in YDL 5.0.2, but work in 5.0.0 and 5.0.1. No problem in 6.0 or 6.1.

* CF, SD, CD/DVD drive not automatically mounted in YDL 5.0.2
See here for how to mount CD/DVD. This problem does not occur in 5.0 or 5.0.1.

* No sound in Java applets on YDL 5.0.0 - 5.0.1. Works in 5.0.2.

* Playstation 3 firmware update 2.0 broke wireless support in version 5.0.2 of YellowDog Linux for PS3. See here for more info. "Wired" ethernet still works. 5.0.1 appears to be working properly -- see this thread. UPDATE 11/27/07: New kernel available now

Returning to the GameOS

The PS3 may be forced to return to the GameOS by holding the power button for more than 5 seconds at power on. This resets your PS3 to factory default audio & video settings. NOTE: If you get to a screen with multiple options, you only want to use the "Restart System" option and nothing else -- the "Restore Default Settings" option actually does quite a bit more than the name implies (you'll lose all your saved games and have to download/re-install any purchased content).

1. Power off your PS3 normally.
2. Turn off the rear power switch.
3. Turn on the rear power switch.
4. Hold the front soft power switch.
5. You will hear a beep - keep holding it down.
6. After approx. 5-7 seconds, you will hear another beep. Let go of the soft power switch.

To return to the GameOS, at the kboot prompt, enter:

game [ENTER]

* Solving problems with burning the Install DVD and installation errors

After downloading the YDL 6 DVD image from one of the public servers, it is a good idea to use a utility called sha1sum to confirm that the file is OK. The instructions below are quoted directly from the public mirrors:

You may also conduct a media check prior to burning the ISO, from
the command line as follows:

sha1sum /[path]/[to]/[ydl].iso [ENTER]

... which will output a SHA1SUM which you compare against the SHA1SUM in
the SHA1SUM file.

To check your media from Windows, select one of the tools mentioned here:

http://www.labtestproject.com/win/sha1sum.exe.html

To check your media from OSX, follow the instructions posted here:

http://www.bresink.com/osx/sha1.html

For example:

Code: Select all
sha1sum yellowdog-6.0-DVD-20080207.iso

f0862b7442e2f38bd01039ab6a6e28db84fe5ded  yellowdog-6.0-DVD-20080207.iso

If your sha1sum matches the one listed for your ISO, then your image file is OK. If not you'll need to download it again. If you're using a download manager and having problems, consider using a different one.

You can find the correct sha1sum for the file you downloaded on the server you downloaded it from (in a text file named SHA1SUM). For example:

ftp://mirror.anl.gov/pub/yellowdog/iso/SHA1SUM
6ebc178539eb4d611f4455fd2c8c7264b5804b82 yellowdog-6.0-DVD-20080205.iso
f0862b7442e2f38bd01039ab6a6e28db84fe5ded yellowdog-6.0-DVD-20080207.iso
259d78e210d5681116bc5fc0d38a1017890a4ca5 yellowdog-6.1-ppc-DVD_20081119.iso
85e7cbb2f5a158c6e00f9e0cd253e77d3a9a6a85 yellowdog-6.2-ppc-DVD_20090629.iso

So your ISO image checks out OK but you're still having problems?

Consider using different software for burning the DVD. On Windows machines, many users have reported success with the freely available imgburn software. If you use imgburn, be sure to check the option to verify after writing. Sometimes it also helps to burn the DVD at the lowest speed instead of using the Auto setting.

A list of open source, free, and commercial optical disc authoring software for various operating systems can be found here.

Finally, at the start of the installation process you'll have the option to check your DVD for errors. It is recommended that you perform the media check at least once before using the DVD.
