Exactly WHAT have you done? We say a lot of things - this doesn't help us troubleshoot your issue in the least. :D

And exactly WHAT doesn't work? A Java Applet in your browser? A stand-alone Java app? What EXACTLY? Can you provide an error message, please?

What version of Java did you install? What was the name of the RPM you downloaded? Did any errors occur during installation?

Please - try again. I can't even begin to figure out how to help you with the little amount of information you provided. Sheesh.

Cheers,
Paul

Ah!Sorry!I just downloaded ibm-java-ppc-jre-6.0-5.0.ppc.rpm and installed it.Then in the terminal window, insert "su -,password"&"cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins"&"ln -s /opt/ibm/java-ppc-60/jre/plugin/ppc/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so",restarted my PS3.Any problem would happen? It runs JRE as it hasn't been installed!
And before I installed ibm-java-ppc-jre-6.0-5.0.ppc.rpm,I tried the ppc64(ibm-java-ppc64-jre-6.0-5.0.ppc64.rpm)edition instead,but hadn't worked,either!So I uninstalled the 64bit one's and changed into 32bit one's.

A while back I had the same problem. Then I tried to create the symbolic link to my home folder (I'm not on my ps3 now, but I think it was ~/.mozilla/plugins/) and it started to work. I don't think there was anything else to it. I don't know why firefox didn't load the plugins from /usr/lib. Anyway, now my javaplugin works.

  • First part - running Java apps stand-alone - no browser.

What is the output of this command?

    which java

    and this one

    java -version

This will test which Java has precedence in your system. Remember - YDL ships with the open-source, reverse engineered GCJ by default. You will probably have to create a symbolic link in /usr/local to put IBM's Java ahead of GCJ Java.

This is because IBM installs to /opt, which is fine for IBM's AIX and Sun's Solaris - but not understood by Linux and its derivatives.

If these commands are showing that GCJ is still the default, creating a symbolic link from the java binary to /usr/local/bin should fix it.

The command you need to type from a terminal window looks like this for Java 6:
    ln -s /opt/ibm/java-ppc-60/jre/bin/java /usr/local/bin
(You would need to be root user for this)

  • Second part - Java in Firefox.

Check to make sure the plugin is registered correctly. Start Firefox, and type "about:plugins" in the address bar. You should see something like this:

    Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0-internal-root_16_nov_2007_18_41-b00

    File name: libjavaplugin_oji.so
    Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0

If you don't see an entry like this, we'll need to see the output of this command - again as root user:
    ls -la /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

Cheers,
Paul

When I try to install "compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-61.ppc.rpm" from the installation CD for some reason the Software Installer just freezes and flashes red on top. Does this mean I'm not able to install it at all? I'm a YDL noob so any help would be appreciated.

What happens if you copy it to your desktop and try installing it from there?

I'm a complete linux noob, i'm 16 years old and have never used linux before in my life! I have recently installed YDL 6.2 on my ps3 (no hassle there) but i am struggling with installing java! i want to be able to play runescape!! i have read countless guides, even the guides off this website to installing it by using the terminal and symbollic links, in truth i dont really have a clue what i'm doing. All the guides seem to be dated compared to my version of YDL and i seem to be having different (and a lot more) complications than other poeple. Not meaning to be too noobie but could some please give me a hand in installing java for my YDL 6.2 on my ps3. thank you :)

Hey buddy,

I would recommend starting at the top playstation 3 forum with the "read me first" thread, scroll down to where it says basic setup and start readin anything and everything that you think may apply to your needs. The more reading the better follow instructions very carefully and try to read through things a bit before just jumping in.

good luck!

There is no difference in the procedure for installing Java for YDL 6.0, 6.1 or 6.2 - it's identical for all three.

So - what issues are you seeing, exactly?

We can help troubleshoot. To start, open a terminal window, and paste the results of these commands as a reply to this post:

rpm -qa | grep java

java -version

which java

Yeah - something looks wrong. Just for kicks, what is the output of this command:

Hello Paul
Code: Select all
[b@localhost ~]$ which java
/usr/local/bin/java
like I said it seems to work ok, I'll try removing the link to java 5 and link to 6 instead and see what the output is then.
edit: well the output is the same only with references to java 6 instead
hmmm I might head off to the ibm website and download a fresh rpm and see what 'appens
edit 2: downloaded and installed slightly newer versions of 5 and 6 removed and remade symbolic links to /usr/local/bin and /usr/lib/mozilla/pugins (java 5) and the clock at http://www.time.gov/timezone.cgi?Central/d/-6/java works fine, but the output of java -version is still the same, there's been lots of talk of "tinkering" on the ps3 slim thread lately, maybe I've "tinkered" somewhere I shouldn't have  still it works so I'll probably leave it alone, still confusing though

That's extremely odd. Is there any chance you accidentally uninstalled compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-61.ppc.rpm ?

A quick rpm -qa|grep compat should tell you if you still have it.
