Do you have a ydl.net account? This is for users who pay for ydl.net accounts and get the "enhanced downloads" ... if you don't have a ydl.net account, you should be using the yellowdog repos listed here for your version of YDL (6.0 or 6.1).

OK that worked!!! am now having problems installing gstreamer. It tells me it cannot install because of protective repository restrictions or something like that.

Please post the exact command you're using to install as well as any output.

I got it going. Thank you so much for all your help. This is my first time leaving windows and its great to have all ur guys help. Is it true there is no way to watch streaming video on other sites that use flash? The flash support thread said that it has something to do with the architecture of the ps3, is this true? Ideally I just want to be able to watch the streaming video provided by the stumbleupon toolbar. I figured it would be same as youtube but its not. Any suggestions?

Not exactly. Adobe Flash is compiled specifically for processor architecture and operating system. Although there is a Linux version, it is for x86 family processors, not the PowerPC family that the core of the Cell processor uses. There is a PowerPC version of flash - but it is for MacOS X, not Linux.

So - the reason Flash doesn't run is not due to the PS3 per se - it won't run on any PowerPC processor based Linux.

This is squarely the fault of Adobe for not providing a PowerPC Linux version of Flash.

There are open source Flash clones - gnash & swfdec - but they are reversed engineered from the Flash specifications and have some compatibility issues.

In the meantime, there are some other ways to watch streaming videos - I like DownloadHelper plugin for Firefox, myself. There's also a thread in this forum describing how to setup Mplayer as a Firefox plugin that might work.

Cheers,
Paul

@bill & paul

Man, you guys are freakin' awesome!!! :wink:
It's people like you that prevent relative noobz like me from just blowing away the *nix install and reloading mac os x again!
Seriously, this is the best, friendliest, most resourceful Linux forum I've been on.
Every other distro I've tried, lasted about 3-4 days at the most (and mainly due to lack of support from community, etc).
Hence I am glad I ended up here.

Thanks for your help.

Hopefully that's a temporary issue ...

You can use my ps3bodega repo instead ... see here:

http://pleasantfiction.ipower.com/bodeg ... ?f=16&t=21

So you'll disable or remove the livna and dribble repos, keep the fedora-extras repo, and add ps3bodega.

Code: Select all
[livna]
name=Livna for Fedora Core 6 - ppc - Base
baseurl=
   http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/6/ppc/
   http://livna.cat.pdx.edu/fedora/6/ppc/
   http://wftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/livna/fedora/6/ppc/
   http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/rpm.livna.org/fedora/6/ppc/
   ftp://mirrors.tummy.com/pub/rpm.livna.org/fedora/6/ppc/
failovermethod=priority
#mirrorlist=http://rpm.livna.org/mirrorlist-6
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0

With rpm.livna.org currently inaccessible, I believe this repo setup will work instead. I don't normally use livna any more since I have everything I need in ps3bodega, but I'm about to try this setup just to confirm it works. The four mirrors are all currently up. After confirming it works I'll update the guide. If not I'll fix it and then update the guide... :P

EDIT: changed gpgcheck to 0 to simplify (skipping gkgkey import)

OK -- updated the guide (first post) so the livna repo is set up with mirrors instead of just the one site. Need to fix that "ezrepos" RPM so it sets it correctly as well ...

So I added the repos using the rpm package and I installed protectbase and when I type repo list I get the info the tutorial says I should. When I go to Add/remove software it hangs while retrieving software information. What now?

Edit your livna-stable.repo file to match what is now shown in the guide. I'm in the process of fixing the ezrepos rpm so it sets it up as shown in the updated guide.
