Man, this is why only 0.2 % of the current pc's run on linux.

Or something like that, you probably get my drift. (I mean like, look at the title and then think of a "hard way" to install)

May I ask, why not?

Because, for some reason, it will automatically insert spaces at the beginning of each line when you paste it in the editor. Having leading spaces at the beginning of each line confuses yum (the software installer) and it spits out an error message, then quits. If you copy/paste normally this does not occur.

Also, the way we're adding repos as described in this guide is not typical -- we're doing it manually because the third party repos are meant for another distribution of Linux. The usual, more automated methods don't work properly for YDL because the repos were meant to be used by Fedora.

Probably because of the <dd> tag in the source code, which makes it copy paste as a paragraph via select and not via manual highlighting.

What about the other spaces? Are they not so important? For example the 3 spaces before "libpurple... etc..."

Code: Select all
[fedora-extras]
name=Fedora Extras
#mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=extras-6&arch=ppc
baseurl=http://archives.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/extras/6/ppc/
gpgcheck=0
enabled=1
protect=0
exclude=finch pidgin libpurple libpurple-perl libpurple-tcl pidgin-perl \
   libpurple-devel finch-devel pidgin-devel libsmi libsmi-devel oddjob  \

[...]

There's a little flaw in the tutorial:

"Fedora Core 6 download server", instead of "Fedore Core 6 download server"

Unfortunately no. Folding@home is strictly for x86 Linuxes.

There was a service like Folding@home that I was using on PS3 Linux. It was called ps3grid, and it used the same BOINC engine as Seti@home, but optimized for the PPE/SPEs on the Cell. Unfortunately, they decided to abandon the PS3 after Sony released the PS3 Slim:
http://www.gpugrid.net/forum_thread.php?id=1370

Your best bet is just to flip back to the GameOS and use the built-in Folding@Home client if you want to contribute.

UPDATE: Apparently, there are a couple of other teams issuing BOINC WUs. See this post for details:
http://www.setiusa.net/forums/viewtopic ... 15&t=14912

It looks like this site has PS3 specific downloads:
http://www.dotsch.de/boinc/BOINC%20Clients.html

ok i need some help, I have been fighting with this for a while now.

I installed 6.2 earlier today, tried to follow the post exactly, I have the 3 protects in place

I tried to run yum-protectbase, and it looked like it worked but it seems to hang up. yum update does too, so does check update

here is some info from the commands I found in the topic, any help would be appreciated

all work was done from su - basically logging in as root

results from yum repolist

extras Yellow Dog Linux 6.2 Extras enabled

and it just sits at that status for a long time, same with yum-protectbase and yum update

I have tried the gui software manager, and it can't find things like the gfeultra nes emulator

I am just trying to get the 6.2 update so bluetooth works and get some emulators running, any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance, sorry for the long post

Postby Moozie » 10 Dec 2009, 00:12

so in reading some other topics, it appears that the system is not hanging, the fedora extras takes a long time, like an hour or more to finish

so, because i have run all these commands, gotten frustrated, rebooted, (because I can't figure out how to kill a process), would someone be nice to me and check my work and recommend my next step?

i have check update running now, I think I have protectbase running, and my ultimate goal is to get the bluetooth fix for 6.2 and get some emulators running

I can reinstall if necessary, I haven't restored my ps3 saves and stuff yet.

thanks in advance again.

ps should I disable the fedora extra package?

Looks ok to me. Fedora extras does take a while ( it excludes 1000 or so packages) but I wouldn't disable it. Your bluetooth issue should be fixed after the yum update completes.

Okay, I am trying to get this all working on 6.2 but I am getting an error...

[Errno 12] Timeout: <urlopen error timed out>
Trying other mirror.
Error: Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: fedora-extras

No matter what yum I try to run. Is fedora out of date again? How do I disable the repo if that is the case?

Thanks

Probably temporary downtime -- http://archives.fedoraproject.org currently not accessible at all ... if it's not back up soon we should be able to find a mirror ...

To disable that repo, just edit the file and change enabled=1 to enabled=0.

Well, I'm on a fresh install of 6.2. I checked out the add/remove software thing before opening up this guide, but I did not install anything. Programs and such did show up. The only change I did from a fresh install was run yum update. I followed this guide and now nothing shows up under add/remove software. It gives an error saying "Unable to retrieve software information. This could be caused by not having a network connection available." I am using the internet fine though. I think I may have seen that error message a couple posts above in the terminal while copy and pasting, but I kept going with it. Basically, I went through the protectbase part of the instructions, and tried add/remove software when it gave this error message. What should I do? Can I restore the defaults of this without reinstalling?

I'm new to Linux, btw.

Thanks

As noted in the post directly above yours, the http://archives.fedoraproject.org/ site is currently down, and therefore the fedora-extras repo for Fedora Core 6 which we normally use is not available.

To disable the fedora-extras repo while we wait and see what happens with that:

1. Open a terminal window

2. Become root so you can edit the file:
Code: Select all
su -

<root password>

3. Open the file in your favorite text editor. Using gedit as an example:
Code: Select all
gedit /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-extras.repo

4. Change enabled=1 to enabled=0, save the file, and close gedit

5. Back on the terminal window, clear the cached repo data with:
Code: Select all
yum clean all

6. Close the terminal window.
