You're not kidding, are you? :P

You're posting in the wrong topic -- this is about how to install software in general -- and I don't know what emulator you're talking about. Please use the forum search function and/or create a new topic with your question, and try to be specific about what you're trying to do.

Did that, rebooted, and still hangs on retrieving software info. Sorry, I realize I'm useless..thanks for your help.

Meanwhile, just to see, I installed VLC using the yum command and it seemed to go fine (although I haven't actually tried the program yet.

That looks OK to me ...

There is a delay created by yum-protectbase (which you need to have installed when using these third party repos with YDL) while it excludes certain packages. If yum is working OK (must be since you installed vlc), then the GUI Add/Remove software should work OK as well ...

Not sure exactly how long the delay is ... I'd say around a minute or so.

Updated link to ezrepos rpm in first post to point to the new version (updated livna repo setup to include mirrors). Unfortunately, I see a lot of guides elsewhere that have copies of the old version available for download, and until rpm.livna.org is back up there will be a lot of people wondering why they can't install software. :shock:

Would be better to have mirror lists for fedora-extras and dribble, too ... actually would be even better to be able to use the repository release rpms if that would work properly ...

Hmm... okay, I have a problem here. Either adding the repos is killing my ability to boot, or adding protectbase is, or both. I followed the instructions in the first post to the letter and it has the same result every time. Basically YDL continues working perfectly until I reboot, at which point it stalls at kboot and I can't make it do anything aside from just typing "game" to go back to GameOS.

My first install I went ape spit installing everything that looked remotely cool, only to have a kboot stall on my next boot. I figured I just installed something bad or wrong or something, so I reinstalled, and just did vavoom so I could play some games plus VLC. kboot stall again.

Third install I decided to go back to GameOS and then reboot after every step until I figured out what the problem was:

1. Installed and configured YDL 6.1. No problems.
2. Updated software. No problems.
3. Disabled bluetooth. No problems.
4. Added YDL Board bookmark to Firefox and added some folders to my home folder. No problems.
5. Set up Pidgin. No problems.
6. Added repos and installed protectbase, following instructions meticulously. kboot stalls on the next reboot.

MEH! Any ideas?

EDIT: Nevermind! I just solved a problem I've been having with my PS3 for a good while, and it looks like it inadvertently solved this one too. Note to anyone else having problems with "Cannot start, correct hard disk was not found" popping up occasionally when booting into GameOS: pull your SATA-II drive and jumper it so it's limited to SATA-I speed. Yeah, I know SATA-II is backward compatible, but do it anyway. Fixes that, and it made kboot stop stalling.

mirror lists

Postby billb » 15 Feb 2009, 15:02

Just saw a blog post re: the rpm.livna.org issue:

http://thorstenl.blogspot.com/2009/02/r ... -dead.html
Update: The DNS for livna.org will likely be unavailable for at least a few days, likely a week or more. So spread the news to make sure everyone is aware of the fact that rpm.linva.org is still alive and remains usable thanks to the mirrors.

Note -- you don't want to use the livna release RPM directly on YDL. I've already added the mirrors to the livna-stable.repo file as described in the guide.

I don't see mirrors for dribble -- their release RPM sets up a repo file that just points directly to dribble.org.uk.

For fedora-extras the mirrorlist is:

mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=extras-6&arch=ppc

So I'll try to get the guide updated today so fedora-extras uses the mirror list instead of download.fedora.redhat.com directly ... it's better this way in case there's ever a problem accessing the main site directly.

Tried my hand at YDL 6.1 but was having network issues. I have since reverted to 6.0 but I was having an issue with the rpm.livna.org repo. Check here and I notice a new its a server issue I also notice a new version of billbs handy repos I will be sure to update my guide shortly. Thanks billb

Hey guys, another newb here...That seems to be a common first line on this board. :D

I think I've got a common problem with some others on this thread but I haven't been able to find an answer that works for me yet...I've just installed Yellow Dog 6.1 on my PS3. First think I did was install the SNES9.x emulator combo (the program and the GUI) through links on another thread. Works great. Playing SNES games with my wireless controllers with sound, the whole shabang.

I then tried to add some repos. First I went to this thread and installed the "ezrepos" rpm. It installed fine. Then I tried to install the "protect base". When I install it I get an error. Code is copied below:

Code: Select all
[root@localhost ~]# yum install yum-protectbase
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Install Process
Parsing package install arguments
http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/6/ppc/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-3, 'Temporary failure in name resolution')>
Trying other mirror.
http://livna.cat.pdx.edu/fedora/6/ppc/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-3, 'Temporary failure in name resolution')>
Trying other mirror.
http://wftp.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/livna/fedora/6/ppc/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-3, 'Temporary failure in name resolution')>
Trying other mirror.
http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/rpm.livna.org/fedora/6/ppc/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-3, 'Temporary failure in name resolution')>
Trying other mirror.
ftp://mirrors.tummy.com/pub/rpm.livna.org/fedora/6/ppc/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-2, 'Name or service not known')>
Trying other mirror.
Error: Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: livna-stable

First let me say that I know nothing about Linux but it looks like it can't connect to any of the repos to install protect base. Then I try to open "add/remove software" from the start menu like tool bar and it will no longer load (it used to work before I installed the ezrepos file). It keeps saying "unable to retrieve software information".

I then opened my livna-stable file with gedit and copied the code from the livna-stable portion on the first page of this thread into my file and saved it. That didn't help.

Any thoughts? Are all of these servers currently down?

Maybe a temporary problem? Seems to be working OK here:

Code: Select all
[bill@localhost yum.repos.d]$ sudo yum install unrar
Loading "protectbase" plugin
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Install Process
Parsing package install arguments
http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/6/ppc/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-3, 'Temporary failure in name resolution')>
Trying other mirror.
livna-stable              100% |=========================| 2.1 kB    00:00
base                      100% |=========================|  951 B    00:00
fedora-extras             100% |=========================| 1.1 kB    00:00
updates                   100% |=========================|  951 B    00:00
dribble                   100% |=========================|  951 B    00:00
extras                    100% |=========================|  951 B

First livna mirror fails, second one works ...

Also if I copy/paste the links directly, the repomd.xml files open in Firefox (except for the rpm.livna.org one).

And I just confirmed that the ezrepos RPM does install the correct files in the correct location:

Code: Select all
[bill@localhost ~]$ rpm -ql ezrepos
/etc/yum.repos.d/dribble.repo
/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-extras.repo
/etc/yum.repos.d/livna-stable.repo

Updated guide so fedora-extras.repo uses mirrorlist instead of direct link. :mrgreen:
