thanks, that fixed the add software issue. So when the fedora-extras repo comes back online, I just need to change enabled from 0 back to 1? Sorry, I'm still trying to learn Linux. So while it is disabled, I don't have access to those programs that I might want to install?

Yes

Any of the programs on fedora-extras, yes, are unavailable. All of the other programs in the other repos are available.

Cheers,
Paul

fedora-extras is back up now.

bilb, i don't think they are up, I am still getting the error mentioned above.
I just did disabled it as per the suggestion above, and did the cleanup.
Now the package update is running, and has been for a while.
All I wanted to do is to update the Firefox, but when fedora was down, it wouldn't even let me update firefox because of the error... Unless there is another way to upgrade the software.

Is this link working for you?

http://archives.fedoraproject.org/pub/a ... ras/6/ppc/

If so, fedora-extras should be up and running... works for me.

The link seems to be working now, I will have to get back home and change it to enabled=1 and try again.

PS: How do I upgrade Firefox to 3.5? Is it still not compatible with YDL?

Nor is it compatible with Red Hat Enterprise, CentOS, Scientific Linux, etc. To the best of my knowledge, there isn't a Firefox 3.5 package for RHEL or any of its derivatives.

Paul

What is the latest version available for YDL? Is it whatever the application package can find updates for via modified repos we manually add?

Fixstars currently provides firefox 3.0.12, and Centos 5.4 (YDL is based on Centos) has 3.0.15 available in updates. So, 3.0.12 is the latest available for YDL from yellowdog-updates.

Paul, I found some 3.5 SRPMs if you feel like giving it a shot ...

That sounds great! I'm on vacation right now, but I'll definitely give it a shot when I get back to Seattle in a couple of weeks.

And - yes - to answer your next question - I'm in Winston-Salem, NC visiting in-laws. Quite a change in scenery for someone born and raised in Washington State. :D

Happy Holidays, everyone! :D

Cheers,
Paul

So - 3.0.15 (and now 3.0.16) appear to require what would be YDL 6.3. Some of the libraries 3.0.15 & 3.0.16 need - nss & nspr - don't even appear to be present in the YDL 6.2 repos.

But - 3.0.14 appears to be building fine - it's based on CentOS 5.3 - so expect that build shortly. :D

I might take a peek at that after I finish this. :D

Whew! I loaded the basic repos suggested and it took like 10 minutes to load up the software installer! I hope it goes a little quicker after the first time accessing it. :?:

For 6.2, make sure you have Yellow Dog Extras disabled, per billb's note at the beginning of the post:

EDIT: Note -- the same third party repos still appear to work OK with YDL 6.1. The additional repos may cause problems with YDL 6.2. If you want to use these third party repos with 6.2, at this point I'm recommending that you disable the yellowdog-extras repo (change enabled=1 to enabled=0)

Otherwise - sorry - but that delay will probably always be there. :(

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul, thanks for that info. I'll be sure to set it to 0 tonight and see how much quicker it loads. I read that part of the guide but figured I'd leave that alone.
