ok so Im having a bit of an issue setting up my video on YDL 6.2

heres some background info:

PS3 40gb via HDMI
Vizio 37'' 720p/1080i HDTV

I've configured and re-configured yaboot.conf more times than I care for lol

heres what I have tried:

131 - Fonts are unreadable and blurry.
130 - too big, fonts still unreadable
129 - perfect font, readable, windows(properties boxes) SLIGHTLY too big
3 - too small, black borders all around

in the last line of the yaboot.conf, right after the numerical value for display, its rhgb(I think thats related to display)
I've read that there are other options, should I try one of those?

this is the only snag I have hit....so far lol

still have to tackle wireless :lol:

please help...

So - let's take a look at the modes you're selecting.

131 = 720p + fullscreen
130 = 480p + fullscreen
129 = 480i + fullscreen
3 = 720p + non-fullscreen

Based on this, it sounds like you have run into the issue described here:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=6915

Basically - progressive video modes over HDMI are unwatchable and blurry with certain TVs/Monitors.

Your only option at this point is to try Component video instead of HDMI. Then, you should be able to use mode 131.

And - no - you don't want to mess with any of the other options on that line.

Cheers,

thanks for the reply but component is NOT an option

my receiver is full :lol:

is there a way to increase the font size just a tad?
maybe for me it would clear them up to the point its manageable until I can upgrade to my 55'' Samsung LED later this year :mrgreen:

and 129 is oohhh so perfect...except for the properties boxes being ever so big...can barely make out the top of the Ok, Apply and Cancel buttons on the bottom :?

I'd still try component and verify that it fixes the issue. If that doesn't fix the issue, something else is going on.

No - not easily. We generally use video mode to do that. For example, although my monitor will do 1080p, the fonts are too small - so I use 720p.

Besides - if you have the font corruption, it will be corrupt no matter how large it is.

Are you actually seeing the font corruption, or are you just having a font size issue? Based on what you posted earlier and the modes you listed, it sounded like the corruption issue.

In other words - are you seeing this?

Hello,

I'm completely new to Linux, and tried to set this up since everything is so small on my tv. It's a 51" Hitachi. I set it up for the max which is 1080i, but should have probably went with 720 instead? I'm using YDL 6.2.

So I hit Ctrl + Alt + F1 to get me to the login, and from there I don't know what to use. I tried the word "root" without the " my username that I set up initially, but then when I hit enter on my keyboard it goes to the password section. From there it won't let me type anything. I'm lost, and after this I need to set it up so I can run my wireless internet to be able to browse using FF, since I can't connect.

Is it hard for someone without any knowledge about command lines to do this effectively? Thanks for the help.

Actually - you are typing stuff. You can't see it though - that's to prevent folks from looking over your shoulder to see your password.

So - login as "root" without the quotes. When you see the password prompt, enter the root password you gave during setup. You won't see anything on the screen, but if you enter the password correctly, then press the Enter key, it should log you in, and you can go on to the next step.

Hello

I have a video mode question and a strange issue.

I have been trying the VESA modes (11-13). Since with the 133 one (YUV 60Hz 1080p) or with the 138 one (YUV 60Hz 1080p) am getting the known issue of the shelf not showing properly on the E7 and the other usual margin issues. I am editing the yaboot.conf file.

Note that I have not tried the RGB modes yet -I will tomorrow-.

Mode numbers have been found using this table:

0:auto mode
YUV 60Hz 1:480i 2:480p 3:720p 4:1080i 5:1080p
YUV 50Hz 6:576i 7:576p 8:720p 9:1080i 10:1080p
RGB 60Hz 33:480i 34:480p 35:720p 36:1080i 37:1080p
RGB 50Hz 38:576i 39:576p 40:720p 41:1080i 42:1080p
VESA 11:WXGA 12:SXGA 13:WUXGA

In mode 13 which is the 1900x1200 and the best for me I am noticing a little vertical area from the top to the bottom of the screen, this area is filed with little boxes and it appears as long as the machine is getting into graphics mode even before the GUI or the log in screen boot. Yes I mean even in the black screen that appears during the boot process.

I know I am not too descriptive with this issue and tomorrow I will try to post a screenshot, however this issue does not appear into other VESA modes (11,12) neither in the 1080I or 1080p modes that I have tested. But in the 1080i / 1080p fullscreen modes got the issue with the margins.

I am in YDL 6.2

I am into HDMI cable.

I got a 22'' LG TV set, bought one year ago.

Any advice to fix the margins issue, or to b able to activate a correct 1900x1200 VESA mode will be much appreciated.

1080p (1920x1080) and WUXGA (1920x1200) have different aspect ratios and your TV is most likely set up for displaying 720p/1080i/p at the correct aspect ratio (16:9), so it's unlikely that WUXGA will display properly without having borders or being stretched / squished in some way.

Do you have any settings on the TV you can play with? Some have a way to change the "input type" to "PC" and behave differently when you set that. Also I've seen it called just scan, cropping, dot by dot, and so on... not all TVs give you the ability to display the full 1080p image within the visible area, though. If you post the model # we can possibly look up the manual for it.
