I had this problem before but I forgot how i resolved it. Reinstalled YD recently and of course once of the first things I install is fluxbox. I set up the menu as I like but when I set my wallpaper in fluxbox I lose it when I reboot. How do I get fluxbox to retain the background? (note using the old version of fluxbox found on yum).

Hello
if I remember correctly add this line to ~/.flubox/init
Code: Select all
session.screen0.rootCommand:    /usr/bin/fluxbox/fbsetbg -l
the original just has fbsetbg -l, this should create the file lastwallpaper (that's the -l) in your .fluxbox folder.
If you have built fluxbox-1.1.1 from source and it's in /usr/local/bin you'll need
Code: Select all
session.screen0.rootCommand:    /usr/local/bin/fluxbox/fbsetbg -l

Thanks you were close. The first time I tried it it didnt work so I checked the path a noticed there was no fluxbox folder in usr/bin/ however fbsetbg was in the bin folder. so I changed the path to

/usr/bin/fbsetbg -l

and it worked.

I installed fluxbox, using "yum install fluxbox Thunar eterm audacious". After the install was complete, I tried backing it up and it told me no such file or directory.

Whats wrong? Terminal Printed...

When you're logged in as root, ~ points to root's home directory (/root) instead of your regular username's home directory (/home/yourusername). So it's saying there's to .fluxbox directory in root's home directory.

That number is usually much higher ... do you have protect=1 in yellowdog-base and yellowdog-updates?

Okay, so I'll try it on the other account.

And yes, I do have them both on 1.

Occasionally protectbase fails for some reason. Running yum clean all before installing something may fix the issue, but this takes longer since it has to download all the repo info first.

I'm still looking at manually excluding packages from fedora-extras instead of using protectbase, but I'm not comfortable enough with doing that to recommend it yet.

Hello
try logging in as normal user, open thunar or nautilus and click on view > view hidden files one of them should be .fluxbox.
Also if you edit say your fluxbox menu a copy will automatically be created, menu~
and billb's right you should have way more packages excluded, with bodega and fedora extras I get 182 excluded (usually :D )

Stopping GDM starting Fluxbox

Postby Jester » 22 Jul 2009, 02:39

"Thats it. What we have done so far should give us a good starting point for using Fluxbox. We can finally log out of our current working environment and select Fluxbox from the Sessions menu located in the login manager (GDM). Now login and enjoy some lightning fast speed."

How exactly do you stop gdm and start fluxbox? I can't said 'login manager' and obviously if I type GDM into the terminal it stops bc it is already running, and if I type fluxbox it doesn't work because I already have a window manager running :?

You don't stop GDM. You use GDM to load Fluxbox. Assuming you have everything setup correctly, Fluxbox should be an option from the Sessions "button" at the login screen.

I say "button" because it isn't marked like one - but you can click on it as though it were.

Cheers,
Paul

Ah thank you Paul. I knew I was missing something I couldn't [find] this sessions 'button' anywhere on the desktop but I knew I had seen it somewhere before, lo and behold it is right there on the login screen just like everybody said. Well it worked beautifully now I just have to optimize it. I like it SOOO much better than the shelf.

Edit:: alright I fixed it up a little bit. I have one question remaining, I use mednafen for my NES emulation (since I just got ydl working recently I haven't gotten any other ROMs that mednafen supports), but for me mednafen doesn't run without first giving it a ROM unlike snes9xpress which comes up then you can choose a ROM. So what I want to know is can I create a button on the fluxbox menu to bring me to my ROM folder? Or perhaps I could make a new submenu that points the the ROMs, I tried pointing to a ROM file (.nes for me) but nothing happens.

i.e. " [exec] (NES) {/root/Desktop/NES/Battletoads.nes} " is the small portion of code in the .fluxbox/menu file but nothing happens when I load it up. That is the right path, I could have a typo but I don't think I do, I'm just convinced it won't open unless I point it to an exe file

Hello
i.e. " [exec] (NES) {/root/Desktop/NES/Battletoads.nes}
you won't be able to run root applications direct from the menu (well you can but you'll have to build gksu from source, which was a bit of a pain if memory serves) does that particular application have to be in root ? or are you always logged in as root, if so don't, set up a user account.
How exactly do you stop gdm
you can sort of, by running in run level 3 or set up auto login
There's a guide here viewtopic.php?t=3606#p15704 I'd definetely recommend the second method (where you simply change the 5 to a 3)
If you value your privacy auto login is not secure but simple to set up, open a terminal and type
Code: Select all
su -
root password
gdmsetup
go to the last tab add your user name and then "security" enable autologin
