VLC-0.9.8a-1ydl61.ppc.rpm

Postby Jaybps3 » 28 Feb 2009, 04:48

I built an rpm for the latest VLC media player thanks to billb for the guidance. It has not been tested by anyone other then myself.

Billb is going to give it a test run and when he does and verifies its stability he will add it to his repository for easy install via yum. The latest vlc has a lot of new features.

One of the cool new features is, That it will play media files over samba so if you had problems previously playing your music shares and media shares using samba that problem is resolved, Another nice addition is the vlc mozilla plugin, which the controls work. You can full screen you tube by clicking the picture and shrink it back to the browser with another click of the picture. It has support for flac and much much more.

Anyways let's hope the test run goes well currently everything works for me.

Also thanks to billb, I now know how to build rpms, VLC has a lot of dependencies and its not an easy rpm to tackle. So now I can build rpms for a lot more things, For example the latest swfdec and gnash things like that.

Just want to note that this isn't quite perfected yet so I don't recommend jumping in and installing it until we've had a chance to test it more and work out any kinks...

So -- for the brave, try at your own risk. For new users, don't try it at this point.

If you insist on trying it, download all three packages to your desktop and use this to install:

cd ~/Desktop
su -
<root password>
yum localinstall --nogpgcheck vlc-core-0.9.8a-1.ydl6.bdg.ppc.rpm vlc-0.9.8a-1.ydl6.bdg.ppc.rpm mozilla-vlc-0.9.8a-1.ydl6.bdg.ppc.rpm

For me, portions of the vlc interface are now "blueish" due to an issue with the updated Qt4 / Qt4-devel in the ps3bodega repo that was required to build PokerTH and qmc2 sdlmame frontend (both of those have this issue, too). I don't think it's my build of Qt4 -- probably a PowerPC / Qt4 issue. Not sure if it's fixed it later builds of Qt4 or not ...

DVD playback on external drive isn't working now, either ...

Maybe you can try and take a Fedora 10 SRPM and edit it to the needs of the PS3. I have looked at the specfile for it and it's not pretty but it is perfectly possible.

We're already doing that, I believe, and that's part of the problem.

I decided to take the links down for now, Its not quite right and until it is no need for anyone to install it, In due time the problems will be resolved and we will get the rpm into the repo until then wish us luck :D

Then how about starting from a clean specfile? I would try and build it myself from scratch but I'm not a big fan of QT.

You are welcome to try that ... have fun! :P

Actually there are some spec files already included in the vlc source archive, but there's not one for RHEL / Centos. Looking through the docs, apparently there used to be one but packagers have stopped building it for Red Hat. It's just a matter of determining what and what not to enable so it will work best on YDL 6.1 with what we have available or can easily update.

Then lets make one. They did it, why can't we right? I am examining the Fedora 10 spec right now along with the older 8.x version to see what happened before they switched to QT.

jaybps3 is rebuilding it right now, so I'd hold off, or at least contact him and see what he's doing ... :) And have a look at the mandriva spec file included in the latest vlc archive (in the vlc-0.9.8a/extras/package/rpm directory). I think that version still builds with the old interface instead of Qt. The Qt interface is nice, just a bit "blueish" due to the issue I mentioned earlier.

Anyway, I'm itching to play some WarHawk now ...

I have rebuilt the RPMS for vlc, I think its about ready I have to rebuid without a few video options that are not needed. otherwise though it seems to work great.

If someone with a little experience on YDL would test this build for me, I would be appeciative. To install download the 3 packages below in order and install them by choosing open with software installer. Please post feedback on how it works for you and feedback on compatibility, Let me know what media works what does not thanks.

I'm pretty close to having this ready for the repo but further testing is needed. so please anyone with experience on YDL please test and post your feedback.

Download the rpms here. Vlc-core Vlc and lastly Mozilla-vlc

With the little time that I have spent on this, I can say that it's working quite well. I have streamed music and The Freakin Sweet Family Guy Channel without a problem. They load faster too. I haven't played other video formats though. Nice work.

Edit: Forgot to mention that the firefox plugin works fine too. I streamed a WMV from a classified site fine.

I used the localinstall feature of yum to install all 3 of them at the same time:
Code: Select all
cd /path/to/downloaded/rpms
sudo yum localinstall --nogpgcheck *vlc*

Choose to save the files to your desktop and then choose open with software installer from there.
