YDL 6.1 NO DVD INSTALL

as a linux noob i was able to figure it out on my own, and here is how!

1 gb usb works for sure.
usb keyboard required
pdaxrom bootloader for ps3 find it here
http://wiki.pdaxrom.org/downloads/PS3/bootloader/
copy to /PS3/otheros on usb stick and install on ps3 (enough threads explaining how to do this)
on your pc, extract YDL6.1.iso or whatever your install is named and copy all files/folders except PS3 and YellowDog to your usb
(you dont need them all im sure, but i did anyways)
put usb back in ps3 and boot other os
pdaxrom bootloader should recognize the usb stick
and using the arrow keys you should be able to find your install, mine was install_ps3_1080p
select language and keyboard
now here is where it got fun for me, but it wasn't too difficult. with a deadblu-ray i couldn't install from dvd or hd and usb was to small so through trial and error i found an http mirror that had all the files, and none that were corrupt.
http://gulus.usherbrooke.ca/pub/distro/yellowdog/releases/yellowdog6.1/os
it should find stage2.img and start to download and begin the installer. to keep it fast and simple i installed no extras to begin with.
it can be done! for the last year i have consistantly read that it cant. if anyone wishes to simplify the process please feel free.

from what i have read, ydl does not look or operate so well with a sdtv but yes this method will work. an internet(ethernet) connection is required to download installation files. also to do this you will also need a usb keyboard, i use a logitech c-bk16-dual and it just works.

Hiya!

Thanks for the install tips. I do have a quick follow-up.

I couldn't get the wiki page to load. However - I suspect they're using Petitboot - which you can get here:

http://ozlabs.org/~jk/projects/petitboot/

Install steps would be the same

Also - I couldn't get the Canadian mirror to resolve - but there's full list of YDL mirrors here:

trying this again, 1 gb usb stick, i believe it will also work with a 256mb.

this was the first bootloader i found that would recognise my fat32 usb stick
pdaXrom-ng-otheros-0.1.2-20090417.bld, the link is still good from my first post.

i have not been able to install 6.2 from any mirror yet, i keep getting that telnet rpm is missing or corrupt. i didn't let that deter me installing 6.1, so i will continue trying other mirrors untill i am successful.

That's good to know. The website is working now - it wasn't working when I posted my previous comment.

Just to be clear - it's not petitboot. :D

Eh - maybe. :D

YDL 6.2 has (or will be offering) a full USB install for PS3. When we finally document it, I might have to sticky the "official" method, and reference this post in the sticky thread as an equally valid alternate method.

Cheers,
Paul

P.S. Thanks for all of your efforts in documenting this. It's appreciated. :D

Hi there,

I also have a dead blu-ray drive, so i'm trying to install from a usb. i followed the instructions and I am able to fire up the bootloader and connect to an HTTP (i am using http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/). It says "Retrieving images/stage2.img" but after a few seconds I get this error message "The YDL installation tree in that directory does not match your boot media"

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Much Appreciated

hi,

sorry to hear about your ps3, hopefully you can get yellowdog running. i have now installed via this method well over a dozen times and i have not had that error, when it prompts you, do you type it in like this?

website name: ydl.oregonstate.edu
ydl directory: releases/yellowdog-6.2/os

perhaps you are using a different bootloader? did you get the preliminary install files from the cd? which cd? i can only confirm 6.1 and 6.2. this is not the official fixstars method for install from usb, have you tried theirs? i hope this asn't discouraged you, you are alost there. good luck

hi there,

yup, i typed the website name and directory exactly like that, and i tried both 6.1 and 6.2. I am also using the pdaXrom bootloader.

here are the steps i am using. maybe you can point out what im doing wrong:)

1. downloaded the pdaXrom bootloader from (http://mail.pdaxrom.org/downloads/PS3/bootloader)
2. created a PS3/otheros folder directory on my usb stick, and dropped the otheros.bld file in there
3. installed it onto my PS3 after partitioning the harddrive
4. downloaded the iso file yellowdog-6.1-ppc-DVD_20090201_NEW_PS3 from (http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/)
5. extracted the contents of the iso file
6. copied all the files/folders except for PS3 and YellowDog onto my usb stick
7. put the usb stick back into PS3, and booted the other OS
8. in the pdaXrom bootloader i see 2 icons, a game controller and usb plug. with my keyboard i select the usb plug icon and set it to "install-ps3-1080p", and then press enter
9. i select my language and keyboard type
10. for the installation method, i choose "HTTP"
11. i choose ok to the default tcp/ip configuration
12. for HTTP setup, i type the following:

website name: ydl.oregonstate.edu
ydl directory: releases/yellowdog-6.1/os

13. i press enter and then it says "Retrieving"
14. after a few seconds, it comes up with that same error "The YDL installation tree in that directory does not match your boot media"

what am i missing?
thanks for the help!

Hello
you are aware yellowdog-6.1-ppc-DVD_20090201_NEW_PS3 is for a specific model of ps3 (the last incarnation of the 80 Gb I think) ?
I'm not sure if that is relevant to your problem.
I have no means of burning a dvd so am also interested in knowing if this works
60Gb ps3 otheros awol. currently playing:bad company and farcry 2 again (seeing how far I can get using permadeath principle)update: regretfully Warren Clyde was involved in a shootout south of Pala and killed when he was hit by a land rover. RIP Warren

@slapops i think the prolem you are havin is that the installation files from the dvd do not match up with the files from the ydl server. i never tried that "new_ps3" and i believe that is where your problem lies. imo, i would try to install 6.2, using the initial files from the 6.2 dvd. im sorry, but thats all the advice i can offer. i am a linux newbie

@bonedome it works! no command line interface, all gui. beat that fixstars.

So is this "theoretically" possible straight off a 4Gig USB stick or memory card?
: 60Gb PS3 : 1TB External : YDL 6.1 : Gnome : 42" LCD : Sound Bar : Daytona 675 :
