VlC Youtube

Postby d10sfan » 13 Aug 2009, 16:33

I have been trying to use VLC as a replacement for flash to watch youtube videos. I followed the instructions on one of the forum posts on how to get mplayer/vlc working and the vlc player loads up and buffers but it does not start playing and instead freezes the whole system. The only mozilla plugins I have installed are vlc and java. I uninstalled gnash and I was trying to use mplayer and totem earlier but I deleted their plugins from the mozilla directory (and they no longer show up in the plugins list).

Also, I saw some people trying to use qemu and one of its libraries that loads applications directly on the system to use the flash player. Does anyone have any step-by-step guide on how to get that working? And how is the performance of that?

Has anyone been able to get Hulu working through VLC?

There's no guide - we never got it quite working - and the performance is horrible anyway. As one of the folks working on that - I gave up due to the poor performance.

You're better off waiting for Gnash 0.8.4 to hit our updates repo. That can handle YouTube, I think - albeit slowly.

Nope - sorry. I use VLC - but not for watching YouTube. :(

Sure - 0.8.5 has been working pretty well for me.

There's a quick build guide here:

Hello
Any ideas on why the VLC stuff isnt working correctly?
maybe, some others have had trouble with vlc lately (me included) and I think it may be due to the yellowdog-extras repo not being "protected" I'm not sure though.
Does vlc work ok playing a downloaded video ?
you could try
Code: Select all
yum uninstall vlc mozilla-vlc
or uninstall via add/remove software,this should also remove dependencies, (I'd make a note of the removed dependencies) then change enabled=1 to enabled=0 in your yellowdog-extras repo file then install vlc/moz again.
re-enable the extras repo and add protect=1 I'm going to try this myself when I get home

I found that using mplayer or vlc is the best solution for youtube in yellow dog linux. The playback performance it quite good as you can see here. I know it works with out a hitch in YDL 6.0 as thats the version I am using. I also know it works in 6.1 as thats the version of YDL jaypbs3 was using when he discovered this work around. I am not sure why it is crashing on you. Maybe it is something to do with 6.2 or the version of firefox contained wherein.

This is the method I use to enable youtube playback

1st in the terminal type the following;

Su
Your Password
yum install vlc mozilla-vlc.ppc

After the instillation has completed type;

yum install gstreamer

then:

yum install ffmpeg

Now open firefox and go to the following page and install the addon:

Then go to the following page and install the following script:

http://tinyurl.com/vlctube

Finally restart firefox and go to youtube.

Thanks Efaustus9 -- I just tested this method on YDL 6.2 successfully. Just one correction -- Firefox needs to be restarted immediately after installing the Greasemonkey addon, otherwise when you go to install the script it won't recognize/install it. Then you can head to youtube immediately after installing the script and it works. Also, no need to have multiple yum commands -- just install everything on one line.

So that's ...

1. Setup third party repos as described here:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3017

2. Now install everything at once:

Code: Select all
su -

<root password>
Code: Select all
yum install vlc mozilla-vlc gstreamer ffmpeg

3. Open firefox and go to the following page and install the "Greasemonkey" addon:

http://tinyurl.com/ynvmda

Restart Firefox after installing the addon.

4. Go to the following page and install the following script (just click on "Install"):

http://tinyurl.com/vlctube

5. Youtube videos should play OK now. I had trouble playing "HD" videos but other than that it works well enough.

I finally got it working. That last post helped, thanks. What keystroke do you use to get out of fullscreen once its on?

f should toggle between fullscreen and windowed in vlc and mplayer
if you go into .mozilla in your home directory and open gm-scripts you can alter the window size aswell

Bill, good news. I think it worked. I re-ran the install and this time it went smooth.

I was able to get Youtube to work on YDL 6.2 after following the VLCTube installation in the other forums. Does anyone know if there have been any updates on being able to run Hulu?

My VLCTube stopped working in YouTube since I did my latest ydl updates (including Firefox). I'm now using:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux ppc64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.12) Gecko/2009072311 YellowDog/3.0.12-1.ydl6.2 Firefox/3.0.12

The videos used to play perfectly, but now I get the following error in a reddish bar on top of the video:

VlcTube: Unable to find video source

Any ideas? My standalone VLC player still works just fine. I've tried the full reinstall of the vlc firefox plugin, greasemonkey, and vlctube, but no luck. Thanks for your help.
