Firmware 3.10 -- video problems?

Postby billb » 19 Nov 2009, 12:28

Updated to PS3 FW 3.10 -- no obvious problems with YDL 6.2 so far. :)

[EDIT: changed subject after seeing reports of video issues for some users ... see below]
PS3 60GB [CECHA01], FW 3.15, YDL 6.2, Samsung T260HD @ 1920x1200

Hello,
I have install the new Firmware Update 3.10, and now Yellow Dog 6.2 does not function any more properly. It seems to me everything to be blurred, thus I never had a problem. What should I do?

Ditto, after the update to 3.10 the screens are are blurred/pixelated, both in the 480i bootloader and when it switches to video mode 1547 in console and in X. YDL6.2 is now unusable for me.

<Edit with additional info>
After some testing I've discovered that video mode 1 still works, it's the only mode that does. Hmm I wonder if having VRAM swap enabled might be the culprit.

Hi everyone,

Just to add a data point here. On my PS3 YDL 6.1 system, there are no issues with Firmware 3.10. Both 720p fullscreen and 1080p fullscreen over HDMI look correct. This is on a North American 60 gig launch console.

Cheers,
Paul

Ugh. I'll have to check my other PS3 -- looks fine on my CECHA01 with YDL 6.2 (with ps3vram as swap enabled).

I confirm problem with 3.10 firmware on my CECHK.
It appears as reduced horizontal resolution.
Smaller fonts are unreadable, but can be used by increasing font size.
Using ps3fb mode 133 showing 1080p on TV.

No problem on my CECHK01 running at 720p (mode 131) over HDMI, either (PS3 FW 3.10, YDL 6.2).

I am having the same problem as well. Text looks blocky and unreadable like using a small system font. I have read in other forums that the ps3 upconverter for PS2 and 1 games have the same effect over HDMI but not component. Even the kboot prompt looks blocky. I have my resolution in YDL set for 1080p and everything looks pixelated. My guess is the update changed the base graphics subsystem that YDL uses under the hypervisor. I hope SCE fixes this problem, seems unlikely as they do not support Linux on the new PS3s.

I sure hope there is or will be a way to fix this. I just got into the whole PS3 linux thing and the video problem is just a bummer. If I do not hear of any solutions soon I may just delete my linux partition. It's a shame because I was learning alot about NIX through my PS3. Oh, and BTW I took a screen shot of my desktop to try and show other users what this problem looks like and when I later loaded the the screen shot through XMB and my Windows PC the file looked fine, no pixelation. Odd.

I run exclusively 1080p over HDMI and I have not seen this issue. Can you post a link to the other forums reporting this problem?

Also - which model do you have? As I mentioned earlier, I have a 60 gig North American launch model PS3. I don't see this in Linux, nor in PS2 emulation. I'll try PS1 next, but I'm guessing I won't see it there either. I'll let you know if I do.

Cheers,
Paul

P.S. Screen captures probably won't work. My guess is that the internal video memory is correct - which is what the screen capture would read. It's more likely an error in the HDMI output. Your best best is to - I hate to say this - take a photo of your screen - not screen capture. It won't be perfect, but it's probably the only way to see it.

Okay, here goes. The model number of the PS3 I am using is CECHK01 NTSC 80GB. Here is the link to that other forum post that talks about the PS upconversion problem (they dont start talking about it till half way down the page). http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre ... p=17568923. I have also posted some screenshots that I took pictures of.

Perfect - thanks for those.

One other data point I think we need to collect. My guess is that this may be a PS3-to-TV issue. What model monitor/TV are you using?

I have an Acer H213H monitor & a Sony Bravia KDL-40S5100 that I use with my CECHA01 PS3. I've been testing with the Acer - I'll do some tests against the Bravia.

UPDATE: Bravia is fine too.

Cheers,
Paul

P.S. New Bravia, BTW - yay!!!!

The Television that I am using is http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/tv-v ... prd_detail. 32 inch LCD 1080p. XMB and all my ps3 games run fine under HDMI. Its just when I boot into Linux this happens. I also am using this TV on my pc hooked up via VGA running 1920X1080 on my Windows desktop as well.

My PS3 is doing the same thing as described and shown in the thread. My tv is sort of an off-brand cheap tv from Astar. I do 720p through hdmi. I hope this gets resolved from our end and not sony's because we probably won't see a fix till the next firmware update which could be a month or so.
