I don't believe so - no. They should be independent.

For modes they're independent. But for which physical output to use, the setting has to be made in GameOS.

Thanks for clearing that up, Owen. It's appreciated. :D

I'm really glad I found this post. I was about to give up all hope of using Linux on my ps3, it's not just a problem with YDL as I also tried Ubuntu first.

I have a CECHA01 with hard drive upgraded to 120Gib and usually running via HDMI to a Sony Bravia KDL-32L4000 at 720p.

With these settings Linux sucked in a big way! :x

Running through component I do not have this problem and everything is crystal clear! :D
Now I have both cables connected and change my tv input when I switch over to Linux.

Thank you all for your troubleshooting!

Actually, after using my PS2 component cable to try getting 720p, it looks like it does output to both ports simultaneously, so it seems the settings in GameOS don't have any bearing in Linux.

Same experience here. However, I have read of someone who had trouble getting 720p over HDMI without ever having enabled that mode or even booted the GameOS with it connected via HDMI. They reported booting the GameOS connected via composite, switched to OtherOS, discovered (as we know) the graphical installer wouldn't work on that, switched to HDMI cable, and got a blank screen when installing at 720p. Switching to the GameOS and enabling that mode reportedly fixed the problem. This is purely anecdotal of course.

Hello everybody,

because until now nothing has happened from the official side, I'd like to try it vice versa - at least to solve my individual question/problem:

Has anyone tried the latest Game OS firmware (3.15) with an Optoma EP1691 (see here for some pics of this beamer: http://images.google.de/images?q=Optoma%20EP1691) connected through HDMI?

If there's anybody out there who could report success in form of a crystal clear Linux display I would be very thankful! That would help me to take a decision if I could update from 3.0 to 3.15.

Thank you very much in advance

I'm not sure if this will help any of us fix the issue, but I spent about 2 hours trolling the internet for fixes, in the meantime, left my PS3 on Linux with the blocky screen, and it burned into my LCD screen. Its not even noticeable to me, but it would have left a huge burn in my monitor had I left it there another hour or so.

No - I don't think this helps any of us fix the issue.

Still - a good warning about leaving a static display like Linux on sets not designed for it. Thanks!

I have now tried component cables. In XMB all the colors are fine and my resolution is set to 1080p, however XMB looks a little fuzzy like shadowing. Then when I boot to YDL the shadowing is still there and my screen looks purple. any suggestions?

The fuzzy I can't help you with. Generally, that's caused by using component cables for a PS2 on a PS3: They aren't designed to handle 1080p frequencies.

The purple, on the other hand, is because you've set an RGB and it's expecting YUV (or vice versa). See this chart?

Code: Select all
Video mode ID:
  0:auto mode
  YUV 60Hz  1:480i  2:480p  3:720p  4:1080i  5:1080p
  YUV 50Hz  6:576i  7:576p  8:720p  9:1080i 10:1080p
  RGB 60Hz 33:480i 34:480p 35:720p 36:1080i 37:1080p
  RGB 50Hz 38:576i 39:576p 40:720p 41:1080i 42:1080p
  VESA     11:WXGA 12:SXGA 13:WUXGA

  full screen mode: <video mode ID> + 128
  dither ON mode  : <video mode ID> + 2048

If you're using RGB, try the equivalent YUV. (or vice versa). My guess is that you've picked an RGB mode, though.

I can confirm this problem with firmware 3.15 and my ViewSonic N2635w television. I have a 80 GB original PS3.

I was using HDMI, and saw the exact same kind of corruption in the photos in this thread. I went out and bought a component cable, and now the display works fine.

This problem is almost impossible to guess the solution to. I was new to Linux on PS3, so 3.15 was the only version I had tried.
If someone from cbe-oss-dev hadn't pointed me at this thread, I might never have solved it, and I would have just given up on Linux on PS3.
Can we have this added to the Yellow Dog Linux video FAQ as a known issue, to help new users that may encounter it?

This is probably obvious, but I also know that it's not OS specific, as I had the same issue when I tried Ubuntu 9.10 before trying YDL 6.2.

Should I call Sony customer support to report this issue?

If I can help out somehow, please let me know.

Added a link to this topic in this forums "PS3 Video Guide for YDL 6".

I'll be interested in hearing what Geoff on cbe-oss-dev has to say about this issue. Here's the thread if anyone wants to follow:
