Well I'm in luck with the ViewSonic VX2433wm monitor -- not experiencing the issue over HDMI or HDMI->DVI.

I haven't tried YDL's original bootloader though -- still using the one I mentioned above. Will double-check.

I tried a technique I saw on You Tube a gamer used to try to get his HDMI straightened out, unplug the HDMI cable , wait a few and then plug it back in with the hope that the PS3 would re-sync the signal.

I waited until the Enlightment GUI screen had finished loading and then tried the unplug, wait, re-plug technique.... no love.

I'm not gonna go out and buy a new HDMI tv/monitor to just be able to view a properly displayed screen which was previously fine prior to Sony putting out the "phat brick" firmware release starting with 3.10 and carrying foward.

No way Best Buy will take a refund/exchange with an explanation of "It doesn't work with YDL on my PS3."

Model number H04, works fine over here, guys. I only checked it on my LCD-TV from 2005-2006. I have 2 other screens, resp. 2008 and resp. 2009, but I see no contribution in checking them.

EDIT:

I'm trying to fix the border-issue on my TV and I noticed the following line:

Code: Select all
Send bug reports to Geoff Levand <Geoffrey.Levand <at> am.sony.com>

Maybe he knows more about this.

It's a shame we haven't heard anything out of Fixstars on this problem.

We probably won't either. My guess is that this is an nVidia issue. Sony has apparently updated their firmware to the latest nVidia drivers.

As I posted in a thread here:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=6915&start=60#p35331

We now believe it's a bug in parsing the EDID (extended monitor information) that is provided over HDMI. It appears that older monitors may send incorrect data - or that the PS3 doesn't interpret it correctly. This may be related to an earlier error that affected nVidia computer display cards - since the RSX in the PS3 is built by nVidia. It appears that the nVidia Linux drivers were ignoring some of this information until a particular driver release turned it on.

(based on data here: http://analogbit.com/node/23 )

My guess is that Sony is using current the nVidia drivers in their firmware - and until nVidia issues them a fix, it will continue.

Again - this doesn't appear to show up on modern HDMI sets - it seems to affect older models only. I would recommend temporarily using component cables until Sony issues a fix.

Cheers,
Paul

What's distrubing is the silence from Fixstars themselves over this problem for YDL users.

In the past, they previously listed firmware problems in their advisories web page...

Looks like I'll have the "opportunity" to see if another monitor has this problem tomorrow. This ViewSonic VX2433wm has turned out to be defective, with a solid purple vertical line overlaid on all resolutions via HDMI or VGA, PS3 or PC. Never seen one do that before. It was such a good deal I'm going to have it replaced under warranty though, and am getting a Samsung T260HD tomorrow. :D

The Samsung T260HD is OK via HDMI or HDMI->DVI as well, all the way up to 1920x1200. 8)

EDIT: I should mention that this is a 16:10 aspect ratio TV/monitor and PS3 games are 16:9, so if this sort of thing drives you crazy don't get the T240/260HD for your PS3! :x

I just setup YDL 6.2 a couple days ago and have had the same almost unreadable blocky image. I'm actually glad to have found that this is not how it's supposed to be! lol! I couldn't imagine how anyone could use YDL like this without going insane... My setup is below in my signature. I actually have component cables that i want to try now but I haven't been able to find them... Doh!
PS3 40GB [CECHG01] (upgraded to 160GB) FW v3.15 YDL v6.2

Wow, I'm glad I finally found this thread. I only recently tried installing YDL and spent a lot of time fiddling with different resolution settings in a failed effort to make the crappy display better.

I have a CECHE01 (80gb with PS2 software emulation) running a fresh install of YDL 6.2 exhibiting the following:
- When connected to a Sony receiver (STR-DG2100) and then passed through to the TV (Vizio GV47L) this problem exists.
- When connected directly to the TV this problem exists.
- When connected to a monitor (Dell S2409) this problem does _not_ exist.

If anyone knows a good URL/phone number for me to use to add my voice to the chorus of those experiencing issues, I'd be more than happy to do so.

Thanks!

- Nathan

P.S. For whatever it's worth, to my eyes it really looks like an antialiasing problem. I could be way off-base, but if there's any way to enable/disable/change the antialiasing settings being used by the OS it might be possible to compensate for what's happening in the firmware...

I am having this same problem. I tried two different hdtvs (a 47" 240 hertz vizio lcd, and a 32" vizio plasma) and two different hdmi cables. I own a CECHPO1 NTSC. I also tried installing ubuntu 9.1 and had the same problem. So lame. The idea of linux on the ps3 had me stoked, until i was unable to read the hieroglyphs it brought up.
It is unfortunate that mine doesn't work, but i am very glad to have found this website.

For now the best workaround seems to be using component video cables instead of HDMI.

I still use my PS3 alot for gaming so changing from HDMI to a component cable was not an option. I was having these symptoms with YDL 6.2 in 1080p, I changed to 720 & low & behold its alot better, i can actually see the text without having to squint!!

PS3 - 60GB launch unit w/ PS2-compatibility & media card bay, FW 3.15 (upgraded to 250GB HD)
TV - Sharp AQUOS LC-37D62U 37" 1080p LCD HDTV (2007/2008 model)

Connected via HDMI, I get a blank screen trying to use any 720p mode in YDL 6.2, but the TV seems to think it's getting a 480p signal. No other apparent issues...guess I'll need to find my PS2 composite cables if I wanna switch to 720p!

By the way, does PS3 Linux just use whatever's set up in GameOS for AV? That is, if that's set up for HDMI video and MULTI AV audio, that's what it will be in Linux too?
