YDL 6.2: Can I reduce the time it takes to install.

Postby HyeVltg3 » 08 Feb 2010, 11:49

I forget where I read it but Billb mentioned something about the new 6.2 coming packed with fixstars' 2000+ packages and that conflicting with fedora-extras causing major install slow-downs. I didn't really think this would bother me but >_> just had to reinstall YDL and having to again reinstall (properly this time) the emulators and apps I want are becoming a real pain with the 15min+ wait before I'm prompted to install the rpm >.< also I remember Billb mentioning that it is better to disable dribble...should I?how?

sorry my question is all over the place. Just finally got a better understanding of YDL (Linux-newbie here) and as you can see its my 1st post :) didn't have any issues before. (just used the search function a lot :D ) but now I'm stumped on this issue....even though it has nothing to do with any errors/problem lol.

Thanks in advance.
Z.

EDIT: *Adds question* sorry, just finished installing sdlmame-0.131u3-1.ydl6.bdg.ppc.rpm and ...was wondering where exactly does it install to?!? Snes9x was nice enough to add the shortcut to apps>games. (would like test out mame before I go all out and get the SPE scaler :P.... Billb(or anyone) is the scaler located in the sdlmame-tools rpm you have on the site?? )

If you're using our default Fedora Extras/Dribble/Livna setup - disable yellowdog-extras. It's redundant to Fedora Extras.

I think billb wrote a little bit about it here:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3017#p11364

EDIT: Note -- the same third party repos still appear to work OK with YDL 6.1. The additional repos may cause problems with YDL 6.2. If you want to use these third party repos with 6.2, at this point I'm recommending that you disable the yellowdog-extras repo (change enabled=1 to enabled=0)

If you're using ps3bodega - I think it's still yellowdog-extras. I'll let billb chime in on that, though. :D

Yup, used that guide to install Fedora./Drib./Liv. :)
so now to delete/disable YDL-extras.

Apps>systools>add/remove >> remove YDL-extras (what would it be called?)

or is code more..."efficient" ?

And where is sdlmame installed? :P

Nope - just edit yellowdog-extras and change enabled=1 to enabled=0 As billb said:

You might have to run yum clean all afterwards.

Done.
hopefully now I wont have to deal with the long install time.

onto installing vlc for vids, a mp3 codec for the music and either gnash or swfdec for flash usage in mozilla.

should I make new thread for anymore "little questions" or add to this one?

If they're a continuation of your attempts to install software - like something errored after you edited the files - add to this one.

If they're brand new little questions, it's best to start a new thread.

Yes - don't do that. We don't support softpedia directly and their tips generally don't work with us.

If you followed the procedure they listed, I would try deleting the files you copied over, then trying the VLC install again.

Also - I'm not sure what the "rf" version of VLC is you're trying to load, but I'd use the normal version in our repositories first to troubleshoot.
