VLC not working properly

Postby Dirty Demon » 03 Apr 2010, 06:14

Well i gave up with the whole VLCtube Youtube thing & now am forced to watch youtube clips via the downloadhelper. Now when i go to open the video in VLC, it opens but i get nothing. The video doesnt start, blank screen. I Press any button at the bottom of VLC & nothing happens. I am using it as a normal user. Have i installed it incorrectly or is it something else?!? I can watch the clips with Totem but am very familiar with VLC so id much rather get that going....

We'll need more information before we can possibly help.

What version of vlc do you have installed (post output of the command below)?

Code: Select all
rpm -q vlc

When you start vlc from a terminal window, what sort of errors do you get? To launch it from the terminal window, just enter:

Code: Select all
vlc
PS3 60GB [CECHA01], FW 3.15, YDL 6.2, Samsung T260HD @ 1920x1200
Powermac G4 1.25 GHz x2, 2 GB RAM, YDL 6.2

Not sure what exactly is going on there... you could try deleting your vlc config files and running again from the terminal -- I think they're located in .config/vlc

As regular user:
Code: Select all
rm -rf ~/.config/vlc

Code: Select all
vlc

Otherwise I'd consider using the version from ps3bodega for YDL 6.2 instead. It's not quite as recent as the version you're using (from livna, I guess) but it works well on YDL 6.2. To set up the repo properly you'd disable livna, fedora-extras, and dribble if you're using them, enable yellowdog-extras if you've disabled that, and follow the instructions for setting it up here.

Then you'd:

As root:
Code: Select all
yum erase vlc

Code: Select all
yum install vlc
PS3 60GB [CECHA01], FW 3.15, YDL 6.2, Samsung T260HD @ 1920x1200
Powermac G4 1.25 GHz x2, 2 GB RAM, YDL 6.2

Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Loading "protectbase" plugin
repo id              repo name                                 status
PS3Bodega            PS3Bodega repo for Yellow Dog 6.2         enabled
base                 Yellow Dog Linux 6.2 Base                 enabled
extras               Yellow Dog Linux 6.2 Extras               enabled
updates              Yellow Dog Linux 6.2 Updates              enabled

As you can see, i dont have livna, dribble or fedora, so this version of VLC is from the ps3bodega repo. I will again, erase & install vlc. Or i may actually try deleting the config files. Will let you know....

Re: VLC not working properly

I'm running the current version from the PS3Bodega repo and it works fine...I think. At first, I thought it wasn't working and then realized I was logged on as root and it refuses to run under the root user. I was able to play an XviD video w/ MP3 audio AVI file logged in as another user, though. The sound quit about 8-10 mins. shy of the ~57 min. runtime, but I don't know if that was a VLC error or something else.

This is under YDL 6.2...I DO recall having trouble getting it to work under YDL 6.1, though.
