Yeah, pidgin's configure script acts a bit differently, instead of automagically disabling an optional feature if you don't have the dependencies, it has to be disabled manually. Annoying. you'll want to run the configure as follows:
./configure --disable-missing-dependencies That will skip missing dependencies instead of aborting configure
That should do the trick.
