Minecraft: Is it possible?

Postby Chambers Boxman » 29 Jun 2010, 11:24

I'm sure some of you are aware of the block-based mining adventure known as Minecraft.

I've gotten Java working from the tutorials supplied here, and played a bit of Runescape, but Minecraft doesn't seem to work, as it just sits at a black screen after it finishes downloading the game packages.

I'm assuming this could be because it runs out of memory before the game starts, but has anyone gotten the game to work?

Nope - won't work. You're TSOL for Minecraft on the PS3, I'm afraid. It appears to require hardware accelerated OpenGL:

Code: Select all
Java Plug-in 1.6.0_20
Using JRE version 1.6.0_20-b02 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
User home directory = C:\Documents and Settings\paulp
----------------------------------------------------
c:   clear console window
f:   finalize objects on finalization queue
g:   garbage collect
h:   display this help message
l:   dump classloader list
m:   print memory usage
o:   trigger logging
q:   hide console
r:   reload policy configuration
s:   dump system and deployment properties
t:   dump thread list
v:   dump thread stack
x:   clear classloader cache
0-5: set trace level to <n>
----------------------------------------------------

This is from a Windows computer, but the results on the PS3 would be identical.

You're actually missing some needed library files (Mainly from the Java Monkey Engine). It took me HOURS and HOURS to find out how to get Minecraft to run on Ubuntu Linux.

Posted a great article on how i did it on my blog - http://timashley.me/node/596

Enjoy! :)

Doesn't look like much help on the PS3 since it runs PowerPC Linux and that Java Monkey Engine, in addition to requiring hardware accelerated OpenGL which we don't have, appears to be distributed as 32 or 64-bit x86 binaries.
