SHA1SUM is a program you can run to verify files. When you run SHA1SUM on a file, it generates a unique code based on the binary content of the file. (i.e. it generates a checksum value) If the binary content changes, so does the generated code.
For YDL ISOs, what you would do is download SHA1SUM for your PC or Mac, then run it on the file you downloaded and compare the value it generates locally to the value in this file:
http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/SHA1SUM
If they don't match, you have a bad download.
