sha1sum is a part of GNU's coreutils. Someone else will have to tell you what YDL calls that package, but it's probably exactly that. It's the heart of a system running GNU's userland.

SHA1SUM is a program you can run to verify files. When you run SHA1SUM on a file, it generates a unique code based on the binary content of the file. (i.e. it generates a checksum value) If the binary content changes, so does the generated code.

For YDL ISOs, what you would do is download SHA1SUM for your PC or Mac, then run it on the file you downloaded and compare the value it generates locally to the value in this file:

http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/SHA1SUM

If they don't match, you have a bad download.

There is a very quick HOWTO here:
http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/SHA1SUM-HOWTO

If you got physical media from Fixstars, you can't run SHA1SUM on that directly. The values won't match.

Instead, the SHA1SUM values listed in the file I posted are from the ISO files on the same site:

http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/ISO/

There is a way to use SHA1SUM on physical media - you have to compensate for the DVD padding. I posted a way here:

This doesn't necessarily mean that the copy you downloaded from Fixstars was bad -- it's more likely that there was some corruption during the file transfer. We've had the best luck downloading from OSU -- I'd try that one. Also, turn off any download accelerators -- sometimes they can cause a problem as well.

For YDL 6.2, you want:

http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/yellowdo ... 090629.iso

For YDL 6.1:

http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/yellowdo ... 081119.iso

Note that on YDL 6.1 there's a boot issue with certain PS3 models (80 GB PS3 model number 98015 and the 160GB PS3 model number 900006) that was resolved by using a different ISO file -- if you have one of those you may need this one for YDL 6.1:

http://ydl.oregonstate.edu/iso/yellowdo ... EW_PS3.iso
PS3 60GB [CECHA01], FW 3.15, YDL 6.2, Samsung T260HD @ 1920x1200
Powermac G4 1.25 GHz x2, 2 GB RAM, YDL 6.2

So - if I understand you correctly, you downloaded an ISO from the link. However - after that, did you run SHA1SUM on the downloaded file?

You really need to do that before trying any more installations. If the SHA1SUM values don't match - there's no point in doing the installations or even burning the disc.

If you did get a successful ISO download, verified via SHA1SUM, then there's a couple of other things to try.

1. Burn as slow as you can - say 1X speed. We recommend using a program called IMGBURN for Windows. Use the Write Image file to Disc option. I believe there is a way to verify after write - you'll want to do this too.

2. When you get to the software selection menu, go with the defaults - don't pick individual packages. I usually choose the first two boxes - the Office & Productivity and Software Development boxes. That will include most of what you need to use in YDL.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Paul

P.S. Sidenote: The memory stick won't help you. You can only install from DVD media. :)
