I've made an attempt at a brief explanation in this post: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3017

If you read through that you should have a general idea what function a "repo" serves -- basically it's an easy way to install software. Specifically regarding the "ps3bodega" repo, it's a collection of software that I thought was useful / fun / interesting / better-off-updated for PS3 users. For me that means a focus on Linux games and emulators that run well on PS3 Linux, but there are other things included as well (see here). Also I have packages built by other members of the community like Paul or jaybps3.

Without software repositories you'd have to build a lot more applications from source code, possibly even making YDL or PS3-specific modifications to the code as I've had to do in some cases for RPM packages on ps3bodega. Also, software installed via RPM packages is easy to uninstall whereas that isn't always the case with programs installed from source code.
