Java 6 or 7 for YDL 6.2 HELP??

I tried to install the Java walkthrough on all the YDL forums. It seems that the link they wanted us to download is old/not there now. The walkthroughs are for older Firefox versions too I think. They have a newer IBM Java download version out now. It will not work following the old walkthrough with the new download. I just tried to replaced commands with the new version numbers instead of old after download but that did not work. Any information on how to install Java 6 or 7 on YDL 6.2 with Firefox? Is there a Java 6 walkthrough link by chance for YDL 6.2?

I've tried Java 7 on YDL 6.2 but it doesn't appear to work with the version of Firefox we currently have. It sort-of works with Opera.

Can you provide a link to the guide you're following?

It appears from some of your posts that you're using zerogame which uses the ps3bodega repo -- in that case you can install IBM Java with:

yum install ibm-java-ppc-jre

Then you just need the link to the plugin:

cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

ln -s /opt/ibm/java-ppc-60/jre/plugin/ppc/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

exit

Confirm installation with about:plugins in Firefox.

And - again - I would remind folks that Java 7 is beta (or possibly alpha) quality software. Unless you're a Java developer, there's really no reason not to use Java 6 at this time. The expected Java 7 release isn't until September or so - and even then, I'd be wary of the first few releases.

PS3Bodega also now has the newest version of IBM Java 6 (v6.0-8.1) from mid-June.

If you installed it before August 3rd, you likely have v6.0-7.0 (from Dec 2009) unless you're doing the auto-updates.
