*SPOILER ALERT* im a total noob/
i know m not the first toneed help on this subject, so post links or simply answer my question like how you would teach a 10 year old, because im slow like that.

1. right now i cannot watch youtube videos. how is the easiest way to play youtube?
2. why it says this when i try to sign in my youtube account?

Secure Connection Failed www.google.com uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate will not be valid until 12/17/2009 01:00 PM.
(Error code: sec_error_expired_certificate)
* This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server.
* If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the error may be temporary, and you can try again later.
Or you can add an exception…

3. why it says this when i try to go on Tools> add_ons?

addons.mozilla.org:443 uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate will not be valid until 08/20/2009 01:00 PM.
(Error code: sec_error_expired_certificate)

4. why on Rhythembox music player it says:

Unable to activate plug in Portable Players

and when i play music thats 'shared" on rythembox music player (shared because i don't know ho to put music/mp3 on rythembox player) it says

"The application "Rhythembox Music Player" requiers the following plugin:
MPEG- 1 Layer 3 (MP3) decoder

i see under products i has Fluendo MP3 Audio Decoder that says 'not installed'
as i download fluendo on my codect installer it says

DOWNLOAD FAILD
Failed to download "Fluendo MP3 Audio Decoder" from
http://shop.fluendo.com/pub/fluendo-mp3.EULA
Reason: Server error 410: ('Gone', 'URI no longer exists and has been permanently removed.')

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

thats all my question. hope to have easy simple answers. images, videos, recommendations will help.

Please see this topic. We may have a nice, easy to install solution soon using a YouTube client called minitube.

2. why it says this when i try to sign in my youtube account?

Make sure you have the date & time set correctly. (go to Applications -> System Tools in your menu) You can have it synchronize automatically if you go to the Network Time Protocol tab in the Date/Time Properties window and check the box next to Network Time Protocol, then click OK.

3. why it says this when i try to go on Tools> add_ons?

addons.mozilla.org:443 uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate will not be valid until 08/20/2009 01:00 PM.
(Error code: sec_error_expired_certificate)

Same thing, I think.

4. why on Rhythembox music player it says:

Unable to activate plug in Portable Players

and when i play music thats 'shared" on rythembox music player (shared because i don't know ho to put music/mp3 on rythembox player) it says

MP3 decoding is not included in YDL and many other Linux distributions due to patent issues. The "Fluendo MP3 Audio Decoder" is a third party solution for that. An alternative is shown here:

To add a little further to what billb said, take a look at my post here:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=2715&p=9986#p10004

Basically, Red Hat based Linuxes - like Yellow Dog - don't include software that have patents or that only allow non-commercial use. To get around this, the original Livna repository was created. Livna is not illegal software, but it is software that isn't strictly GPL.

Red Hat even takes this to the extreme of not including repositories in their default configuration that contain this restricted software. That's why you have to manually add Livna, etc.

MP3 is definitely one of these restricted types of software - it contains numerous patents and isn't strictly GPL.

Paul

No - let me explain a little further.

In billb's response to you:

he outlines how to add free MP3 support.

Basically - the MP3 codec can't be included by Red Hat/Fedora-based Linuxes - like YDL - because it's copyrighted software, and YDL's license only allows free & open-source software. Also - YDL can't include repositories that include this software. But - there's nothing to say that you can't add this software to a YDL installation yourself.

It's very hard to exist in the real world without copyrighted software - and Red Hat/Fedora knows this. So - the Livna repositories were created to solve this issue. They were officially disconnected from Fedora/Red Hat, so they could include copyrighted - but not illegal - software like MP3 codecs - and Red Hat/Fedora could maintain the necessary GPL distance, while reaping the benefits.

We include instrutions how to connect to them here:
Howto: Install software (the easy way) YDL 6

After that, you just use YUM to install gstreamer-plugins-ugly and gstreamer-plugins-bad - that will give you MP3 support.

As for why Ubuntu includes this type of software by default, their parent company, Canonical, pays license fees to allow this software to be distributed. Their installer will allow you to go strict GPL - or to go "dirty", and load MP3 codecs, etc.

Paul

Just to be clear - to enable MP3 support:

1. You will need your PS3 to be connected to the internet.

2. Follow our guide here: Howto: Install software (the easy way) YDL 6

This will enable the 3rd party repositories that will allow you to install copyrighted software like MP3 on YDL.

3. Start the Add/Remove Software application. This is found from (YDL Logo) --> Applications --> System Tools --> Add/Remove Software

4. In the resultant window, click the List tab

5. In the resultant List view, select gstreamer-plugins-bad and gstreamer-plugins-ugly and click Apply

6. Wait for the installer to complete.

Paul

They definitely work for enabling MP3 playback.

For the program I use - Totem - this was all I needed.

Since I don't use rhythmbox, there may be other libraries required besides these - that's what I'm asking the rest of the forum members.

Let's put it another way.

JUST FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS AND DO THIS. REGARDLESS OF WHICH APPLICATION YOU USE, YOU'LL HAVE TO DO THIS ANYWAY. NO HARM WILL COME TO YOUR SYSTEM.

What part of the step-by-step instructions here:
Howto: Install software (the easy way) YDL 6
in the "Set up Additional Repositories" section did you get confused on?

I will summarize here for you:

Set up Additional Repositories

So, open a terminal window by selecting the menu item: Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal. That should open a new window with a [your username@localhost ~]$ prompt.

The command su is used to change your effective user id and group id. Entered by itself with no arguments, it assumes you want to become the "root" user and will ask for the root password. Enter this now:

Code: Select all
su -l
<root password>

(that's a lowercase l, not number 1)

Then you can open the graphical text editor from this terminal window as if you were logged in as root. So enter this:

Code: Select all
gedit

This should open a blank window titled "Unsaved Document 1".

Copy the following text in the box below Code: (highlight, right-click, select Copy -- do NOT use the forum's Select All function) from your browser window to your "Unsaved Document 1" window (right-click in the blank window and select Paste).

Code: Select all

To save this new file, click on File -> Save As. In the box next to "Name" in the Save As... window, enter this:

/etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-extras.repo

And click on Save.

add two more repositories in the same manner. Copy and paste the text below from your browser to your text editor window and use "Save As" to save the file under the name listed above the text.

/etc/yum.repos.d/livna-stable.repo

Code: Select all

Code: Select all
[dribble]
name=Dribble for Fedora 7 - ppc
baseurl=http://dribble.org.uk/repo/7/ppc
enabled=1
protect=0
gpgcheck=0

We're done adding repos now, so you can close the gedit text editor window.

IMPORTANT -- DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!

Back on the terminal window, we need to install something called protectbase. This will prevent any repositories other than yellowdog-updates from replacing files from your yellowdog-base.repo when you update. This is easy to do -- just enter or copy/paste the following three commands to your terminal window (you still need root privileges):

Code: Select all
yum install yum-protectbase

Code: Select all
echo 'protect=1' >> /etc/yum.repos.d/yellowdog-base.repo

Code: Select all
echo 'protect=1' >> /etc/yum.repos.d/yellowdog-updates.repo

Code: Select all
echo 'protect=1' >> /etc/yum.repos.d/yellowdog-extras.repo

To confirm you have the new repos set up properly, enter this command:

Code: Select all
yum repolist

The result should be:
Code: Select all
repo id              repo name                                 status
base                 Yellow Dog Linux 6 Base                   enabled
dribble              Dribble for Fedora 7 - ppc                enabled
extras               Yellow Dog Linux 6 Extras                 enabled
fedora-extras        Fedora Extras                             enabled
livna-stable         Livna.org Fedora Compatible Packages (st  enabled
updates              Yellow Dog Linux 6 Updates                enabled

After that you can close the terminal window -- we're done!

As for MP3s, what part of my procedure here:
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=7604#p39523
isn't clear? I don't see how this can be any clearer.

I would STRONGLY suggest trying these things before posting any further. Then - if you have trouble, ask follow-up questions.

Cheers,
Paul

You have a space in front of [livna-stable] in your /etc/yum.repos.d/livna-stable.repo file which generates that "Config Error: File contains no section headers" error.

Considering what you want to do, I'd suggest using the alternate "ps3bodega" repo setup as mentioned in the beginning of the "How to Install Software" guide (which is a 15-page long topic because, as you can see, sometimes people don't understand or make mistakes). :P

So... looking at what you have so far, the following commands should take care of that ...

0. Open a terminal window (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal)

1. Temporarily login as the "root" user using the su command:

Code: Select all
su

<enter root password>

2. Get rid of the extra repo files you created earlier:

Code: Select all
cd /etc/yum.repos.d

Code: Select all
rm fedora-extras* livna* dribble*

3. Set up the ps3bodega repo (a working internet connection will be required):

Code: Select all
rpm -ivh http://pleasantfiction.ipower.com/ps3linux/ps3bodega62/ppc/ps3bodega-release-6.2-2.noarch.rpm

Note that's all one command -- not multiple lines. It should only take a few moments to complete.

4. Time to install some stuff ... snes9x-gtk for SNES emulation, minitube for YouTube videos, deluge for torrent downloads, xmms for mp3 playback, and unrar ...

Code: Select all
yum install snes9x-gtk minitube deluge xmms unrar

5. Assuming everything went OK, you're done and can close the terminal window or just type:

Code: Select all
exit

You should find snes9x-gtk in Applications -> Games. minitube will be under Applications -> Sound & Video. deluge BitTorrent client will be under Internet, though I don't normally start it like that. When you click on a torrent link in Firefox you should have the option to open it with Deluge. For the, the default settings work fine with no additional configuration (I just select "random ports" and that's it).

I don't typically use limewire / frostwire /etc.

Also, you're on an SDTV? Some of these things are going to be a pain to use because of the low resolution. I have some tips for that ...

Tips for dealing with the low resolution on SDTV

After using it a bit you'll see why it isn't supported -- many windows will be too large for your screen, making it difficult to use certain applications. Some things that will help:

Right-click on the edge of a window and select "Move", or select a window to move and press Alt-F7. This way you can adjust the window so you can get to any dialog boxes that went off the screen.

Learn to use keyboard shortcuts in Linux -- some can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_k ... _shortcuts

And do you have a regular username instead of just "root"? If not you need to create one -- back on the terminal window:

Code: Select all
useradd yourusername

(replace "yourusername" with your desired login name)

Create a password for the account:
Code: Select all
passwd yourusername

(replace "yourusername" with the one you used)
Code: Select all
reboot

When you get to the login screen, enter your username and password created above.

And one last word of advice -- don't be that guy!

No, that doesn't look good. :P Must not have removed the dribble.repo file for some reason ... try again this way:
Code: Select all
cd /etc/yum.repos.d

Code: Select all
rm -rf dribble*

Code: Select all
rm -rf livna*

Code: Select all
rm -rf fedora*

Then list the directory contents -- there should be nothing in there but: yellowdog-base.repo yellowdog-extras.repo, yellowdog-updates.repo, and ps3bodega.repo. If there are some additional files with the same names ending with ~ that's OK. The ls command will do that:

Code: Select all
ls

what is first? install emulator? getting rythembox to work? enabling mp3 playback? i say this because ther should be a easy way for all this. im guessing Respitorys is an importace to all my question?

This IS the easy way.

You are correct - it's asking you a question. It's confirming that you want to delete the file. You only deleted the first one, though - it asked you 3 more times. That's why you have the "File contains no section headers" error - dribble.repo is still there.

billb's post immediately above mine should get you straightened out:
