Not playing in the minitube Youtube client, or not playing in Firefox? The reason I suggested minitube is that it's the easiest way to watch Youtube videos, but you don't watch them on the site like you normally would in Firefox -- you launch the minitube application in Applications -> Sound & Video. As Paul explains in this topic, there's no Adobe Flash player for PowerPC Linux which is what you're running on your PS3 (a workaround is suggested in that topic).

i saw that SNES is in Games, i never try to download any RAR files.

Err... OK. Since you've installed unrar you'll be able to extract .rar files in the archive manager (Accessories -> Archive Manager) if needed.

im just confused on why it says [root@localhost yum.repos.d]# at the end?

That's just the command prompt showing the current user (root), the host name up to the first . (localhost), and current working directory (yum.repos.d). If you're done entering commands you just type exit or close the window. If you want to learn more about it go here:

Nobody wrote:download pc games like counter strike, and download application called Virtual DJ

BTW - this won't be possible with the PS3.

There's a number of reasons why - but the two main reasons are:

  1. The PS3 uses a Cell processor based on the PowerPC architecture. A PC uses an Intel family processor (x86 or x86_64). Binary code for PowerPC can't run on Intel and binary code from Intel can't run on PowerPC. They are incompatible.

There is an Intel emulator for the PS3 called QEMU - but it's really slow since it emulates an entire PC on your PS3 - including the Intel processor. It's much too slow to run CounterStrike for sure, and it doesn't appear to have enough sound hardware support for Virtual DJ.

  2. The PS3's hypervisor prevents access to the PS3's built-in nVidia graphics chip. So - Linux can only use a simple pixel display (i.e. framebuffer). Modern PC games require low level access to the graphics card - this is known as 3D acceleration. Sony has locked this out from Linux.

No graphics acceleration - no 3D games. No 2D acceleration either - so HiDef videos are problematic as well. Only very simple graphics can be displayed.

So - you might as well strike these from your list right now. Sorry. :( We've all been struggling with compatibility issues like this for quite a while, now.

Cheers,
Paul

[MODERATOR EDIT: Two things. 1. Don't need the screen capture - only the text in the box and the application that generated it. 2. You mentioned something illegal in your post. I've had to edit it out. Remember my warning about proper topics? That isn't one of them. Any further reference to this subject is not allowed. -Paul]

Okay - this post is starting to skirt our forum's rules. Here's the deal - legally - the only ROMS you're allowed to have are backups you've made from the cartridges you own. Most likely - depending on the copyright - you are not allowed to legally search for them on-line, even if you own them. We describe some of the legal issues here:

viewtopic.php?f=19&t=5153&start=0

It sounds like you don't have the games you're listing, so at this point, we have to stop discussing this. Sorry.

You can ask more generic questions about troubleshooting the emulator though - that's fine. :D

For example...

Nobody wrote:i get a error:

Error message from the Archive Manager application:

What this means is that you haven't loaded support for 7z archives. That's another type of file compression - like ZIP or RAR.

You should be able to use Add/Remove Software to add support for this format. Here's a step by step:

0. Open a terminal window (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal)

1. Temporarily login as the "root" user using the su command:

Code: Select all
su

<enter root password>

2. Install p7zip support:

Code: Select all
yum install p7zip

3. Assuming everything went OK, you're done and can close the terminal window or just type:

Code: Select all
exit

I don't think that archive type is supported in snes9x-gtk regardless, but you can install/use p7zip to extract them first. That would go something like:

7za x /path/to/archive.7z

They usually end with .smc, or .zip (compressed archive including a .smc file) is OK for snes9x-gtk.

I'll check on snes9x-gtk and make sure there are no issues on my system.

No, your internet connection has nothing to do with that.

(sorry, i wanted to edit my last post so i can add more questions)
everything is alright. i got unrar, i got minitube to play youtube videos, i got snes9x emulator and ps3 controller to play emulator games like streetfighter2 and zelda.

but i got a ew questions and problems

question: how can i get Frostwire?
question::what is bittorrent and how is that good?
question:how can i have fullscreen on my 480i sdtv?-(becausee of the blackbars around)(my question dont need to be answerd but i will gladly appreciate your help on my problems)

im always frezzing on my emulator. like it plays good for a few minutes the after a while screen load slow, dragges and freezes? i got wireless internet and i dont think playing emulator games required good internet connection
that goes the same with playing movies on my movieplayer, minitube and mp3 on rythembox.
like it works great for a moment but after a while it just stops and error message pop ups unabling me to do anything

so internet is not required to play mp3 movies and emulation, but why it acks like im loosing stong connection to do it? like it got weak and stop functioning? is it anything to do with RAM? or the speed and strength my ps3 pushing?

  1. You can get a Frostwire that works with the PS3 from here:
    http://main3.frostwire.com/frostwire/4. ... noarch.rpm

We have a guideline to installing it here:
    viewtopic.php?p=12117#p12117

You'll need to install IBM's Java first - the built-in open-source Java is too slow for Frostwire. We have a post here on how to do that:
    viewtopic.php?t=2935

  2. Bittorrent is both a program and a protocol. Frostwire uses the bittorent protocol, for example. What bittorrent does is probably out of scope of our forum, but you can read more about it here:

    Protocol:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_(protocol)

    Program:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_(software)

FYI: billb had you install deluge, which is a bittorent client. So - with deluge and Frostwire, you should have your bittorrent needs covered.

  3. 480i fullscreen can be problematic. The issue is that 480i TVs don't show all of the screen. They lose about 10% to 20% of their borders to overscan. So - by default - the PS3 compensates for this by shrinking the screen and adding black borders.

You can tell the PS3 to draw to the full edges of the display. We have a post about how to do that here:
    viewtopic.php?t=3524

However - this might not be the solution you're looking for, since now your windows will extend past the edge of your screen, and you won't know where you're clicking.

Basically, you have to decide if you want a desktop that's smaller than your screen or larger than your screen. Since overscan is random - depending on the manufacturer of your TV - there's no way to know how to set the screen exactly.

There is a utility called fbset that can help with this. It's kind of tricky to use, but there's a guide here: viewtopic.php?p=21232#p21232

    NOTE: If you're using 6.2, DON'T UPGRADE THE KERNEL - it's already in 6.2

Cheers,
Paul

couple problems now. frostwire wont work and my mediaplayer like minitube, rythembox and emulator seems to be causing problems. for example, it plays perfect after a while is slows, draggs, then it freezes enabling me to use it.
what causes that to happen?

[MODERATOR EDIT: Don't need the frostwire screencaps. Removed to save forum space]

like everthing runs fin untill is freezes

Not really - no.

The only thing I can say is - don't run too much at once. There's only 256 megs of RAM in the PS3 - and some of it is used up by the video display and hypervisor.

When you exceed the 256 megs, the PS3 has to use swap memory, which is *much* slower. This might be causing the symptoms you describe.

Also - video playback is problematic. We've found that DVD-quality videos are about the best you can do - 720x480 pixels. Anything larger than that, and you run into framebuffer display limitations.

You mention that you're getting error messages. Can you post them here please? Otherwise, we just have to guess. :D

Cheers,
Paul
