minitube 1.x update on ps3bodega

minitube 1.2 was released on Oct. 11th and the updated RPM is now available on ps3bodega for YDL 6.2. This version adds the ability to download videos. :D

http://flavio.tordini.org/minitube-1-2-is-here

Minitube is a native YouTube client. With it you can watch YouTube
videos in a new way: you type a keyword, Minitube gives you an endless
video stream. Minitube does not require the Flash Player.

Minitube is not about cloning the original YouTube web interface, it
strives to create a new TV-like experience.

Grrrr did they break minitube or is it just me? I keep getting "Cannot locate media source" when trying to play anything.

Thanks -- the developer has (very quickly!) confirmed the problem already though:

I’m guessing the ‘could not open media source’ error is due to a change on youtube. minitube 1.2 has been working great for me up until the last day or so.

@billb @Shawn Yes YouTube changed something. I already have a fix, but the new URLs trigger what I think is a Phonon bug with URL encoding. So I am trying to workaround it. Stay tuned.

I didn't realize how addicted I had become to that application! Funny that I used to have to switch over to my Windows machine to watch Youtube videos and now I actually prefer using minitube on YDL/PS3!

minitube 1.3 is available now and I've rebuilt the RPM package, but it's not updated on ps3bodega yet. Playback is working again, but it's not playing videos in a continuous stream like it normally does. I put in my €9 donation today anyway.

I went ahead and updated to minitube 1.3 on ps3bodega, though the problem with continuous playback is not yet resolved for me. At least it plays videos again.

EDIT: actually the continuous playback issue only seems to apply to certain videos ... it's working OK for most, just not what I was searching for in testing ("shinedown") :)

Looks like it's time for another minitube update:

http://flavio.tordini.org/minitube-1-4
This release introduces YouTube channels support in Minitube. At first I thought it would be just a minor feature. You just search for a username instead of keyword. No big deal. Boy, I was wrong. While trivial from a technical perspective, being able to watch YouTube channel in Minitube brings a whole new depth to the application. Discovering channels is easy thanks to the autocomplete popup, which suggests the most relevant channels for a given keyword.

Version 1.4 also fixes many playback problems. Some of them are actually caused by slow YouTube streams. Minitube now tries very hard to get a fast stream and discards slower ones.

Linux CLI users will enjoy a small new feature. Minitube now can be launched from the command line specifyng a keyword or YouTube URL.

Sounds like a great update -- I'll try building it tonight. The ability to launch from the command line and specify keyword or URL sounds nice.

And it works great! :D Will update it on the repo tomorrow.

The minitube 1.4 update is now available on ps3bodega for YDL 6.2. :D

Though it's nothing like "the old days" it appears a few are still using the repo. There were around 25 downloads of the Firefox 3.6.13 update in February, and about 18 downloads of minitube.

Anyone else having any trouble with minitube not playing videos at all? It suddenly quit playing videos for me a few weeks ago. I've even tried a completely fresh install and it does the same thing -- brings up the list of videos but never actually plays any. If I run from the terminal I see it keeps retrying the same video url over and over.

I'm running YDL 6.2 with the latest updates and minitube 1.4.3 ...

works for me, might be something with the kernel?
I have the zerogame kernel from 0.56 back in January, before there were complaints about the kernel not updating with zerogame.

Thanks for the response -- glad it's still working OK for you. :)

Should all be the same kernel though -- I had an updated one available for a while, but haven't had that in the repo for months. The only updated kernel available in my repo setup (YDL 6.2, ps3bodega, and zerogame) is the official update from Fixstars that fixed the issue with USB Bluetooth device support.

Not in front of my PS3 or I'd post the version I'm running.

Well that's odd... today is bring-your-PS3-to-work-day :P ... so I see if minitube works OK here and it runs just fine!

So something to do with my network, isp, or internet connection speed ... ?

That's an awesome connection you have there! Mine looks like dialup compared to that. 5.78 MBps down / 0.42 MBps up / 51ms ping ... D+ :(

But it's not related to my connection speed -- I have an x86 laptop running Ubuntu and the same version of minitube and it works fine on that using the same connection.
