Improving performance

Postby trj021782 » 15 Oct 2010, 19:29

Alright, recently I broke my Ubuntu install and now I am running YDL 6 on my ps3. Similar to my old ubuntu install this OS runs like pure distilled @$$, any recommendations?

We have a lengthy topic on performance improvement ideas here:

viewtopic.php?p=14791#14791

Some of the more worthwhile suggestions include:

* Disabling services you don't need
* Reducing the memory wasted on the frame buffer
* Changing desktops / window managers -- Fluxbox is very light on resources but also on features (for example you have to create your own menus). XFCE4 is nice and responsive while retaining a good set of features

It would help if you could be more specific regarding your performance issues. Also, others may be more inclined to respond if you're a bit more tactful in your posts.

EDIT: On YDL 6.2, XFCE4 is included but not installed by default. To install:

Code: Select all
su

<root password>
Code: Select all
yum groupinstall "XFCE4 Desktop Environment"

Code: Select all
exit

Code: Select all
cp -a /etc/skel/.config ~

Code: Select all
exit

Then logout, click on Session at the login screen, and select XFCE

Oh and another thing -- on some web pages that make heavy use of Flash, YDL's Flash alternative (gnash) will sometimes use up a huge amount of memory and cpu time. Since the flash alternative generally only works for displaying Flash advertisements I usually just disable it (Tools -> Addons -> Plugins). You could also use one of those Firefox addons that blocks Flash until you click on it.

For viewing Youtube videos, the best solution I have found is minitube, available if you use the "ps3bodega" repo for YDL 6.2.
