Updates

Postby CountRaven » 09 Dec 2011, 15:08

Hello! I am new to the forum! Cograts for your great work :D

Well I got a little question to ask.

got a PS3 fat, FirmWare 3.15.

I am installing YDL 6.2 successfully.
All works fine. I am using XFCE.
XFCE would notify me for 69 updates on a window appearing on the top right of the screen.

I select Apply updates, the download process starts and finishes ok but when the install process starts, there is a message appearing "there were errors installing this software" or something similar.

Are those updates important? -I noticed a kernel update as well-...

will my system be funcitonal if those updates would be done successfully? -I remember that my Pegasos 2 system was not booting in Linux anyore after a kernel update but this was on another distro-.

What do I need to do in order those updates to be done correctly?

Thanks.

Checked out the details on the error message, it seems that there was a conflict between two dhcp packages... selected not to install them and trying again... Hope that the new Kernel not to mess my system.

The kernel update is required on YDL 6.2 to connect the Sixaxis over bluetooth and shouldn't cause any problems. The kernel included in the original release lacked usb bluetooth device support.

I have one more question.

One the original install of YDL -from the DVD- I have installed all the packages -including the optional one-.

Does it affect the boot time / general performance of the system?

Is it recommended?

I am thinking of making another install and select only the basic setup.

What would you recommend?

During installation I usually just check "Software Development" and leave the other two unchecked. If you're not planning on building any applications on your own you can leave that unchecked as well.

If you install everything you may end up wasting some hard drive space on things you never use, and also you may have more services running in the background which you don't need.

Also, I prefer using GNOME of XFCE over the default Enlightenment/E17 desktop -- E17 has a few annoying bugs that pop up occasionally.

Hi,
my GNOME works perfectly, just want to know what XFCE over the GNOME.
Also, when I open the XFCE, found many KDevelop applications were missing, how can I bring them into XFCE? They are all in GNOME.

Thanks.

Memory usage mostly. XFCE has a smaller memory footprint than GNOME. There's other differences too, but that's the main one.

Normally, this doesn't make much difference, but since the PS3 has only 256 megs of RAM, you might see increased performance switching to XFCE.

Cheers,
Paul
