VLC doesn’t appear in the menu

I recently installed Yellow Dog Linux 6.2.
I’m running GNOME.
I already did yum update.
From the root account, when I issue the command,
yum install vlc
I get this message.

Loading ”installonlyn” plugin
Setting up Install Process
Parsing package install arguments
Nothing to do

I get the same exact message when I try to install MPlayer.

I don’t see either VLC or MPlayer in GNOME, Applications > Sound & Video.
The Movie Player can’t play DVD ISO images because I don’t have the proper plugins.
I followed some instructions on the web to install the plugins, but apparently it failed.
I would really like to run VLC.

Before we troubleshoot any further, the very first thing I need to ask you is: Have you set up the 3rd party repositories? VLC isn't present in the default YDL setup.

There's instructions here: Howto: Install software (the easy way) YDL 6

You need what we call the 3rd party repositories (aka repos) to install VLC.

If you have set them up, we can troubleshoot from there.

Also - unless the instructions on the web were PowerPC specific, they won't work. The PS3 has a PowerPC core, not an Intel (x86 or x86_64) core. Generally, binary files compiled for Intel architecture won't work on PowerPC and vice versa.

Cheers,
Paul

The webpage that you gave me sucks!
I followed the instructions exactly, and I got this error message when I tried to add software.
“Unable to retrieve software information”
Now the situation is worse because I can’t add any more software.
Ironically, that very instructions webpage sent me to ps3bodega which worked.
Anyone with PS3 & YDL should be sent directly to ps3bodega and bypass the dangerous “How to install software (the easy way) YDL 6”.
VLC is now working. Thanks.

I haven't tried the fedora-extras/livna/dribble combination recently -- will have to check it out and see if it still works (unless anyone can chime in first and save me the trouble).

The error you've posted doesn't provide enough information for me to know why it wasn't working for you. There's some info on getting a more useful error message in this post: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=4785

But since you're already using ps3bodega I wouldn't worry about it.

Those are still the repositories I use. :)

It's possible a server is down or an IP address has changed. Billb - I'll check with my PS3 tonight, and update the page accordingly, if necessary. Thanks for the heads up! :D

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Billb,

It looks like dribble.org.uk is off-line. It's hard to tell if it's permanent or temporary. I'm thinking, since the repo is incorporated into RPMFusion, that it might be permanent.

Should we make a note of it on our post, and set the enabled=1 to enabled=0 for now? What do you think?

Otherwise, the rest of the repos look good.

I'll see if I can find a dribble replacement - like a mirror - but so far, I can't find anything.

Cheers,
Paul

I see ... couldn't find any mirrors either but didn't have much time to search. I'll make a note of it in the guide unless you get to it first. ;) Thanks for checking on it.

Dribble repos have been offline for ~a bit more than half a year or so..

I doubt you'll find a similar replacement for it.

Ah, thanks -- I'll just go ahead and remove that from the guide. There weren't that many packages we used from there anyway, and anyone interested in what little there was (mostly emulators) should be using ps3bodega instead.
