PS3 video blinking during install

I'm trying to install YDL 6.0 on a US 60GB PS3 with firmware version 2.42. The PS3 is connected to an LCD TV (natively 720p) via HDMI. As far as I can tell, the disc burned fine (verified with: dd if=/dev/cdrom bs=2048 count=<fs length from header> | sha1sum). When I run the installer, I get either no video at all or the video blinks on and off, regardless of which mode I choose (including text). I have never seen this behavior with anything other than the YDL installer (I've run a Gentoo system, a couple of Geoff Levand's kboot builds, petitboot-0.2, and of course Game OS). I have had a problem with the TV sometimes losing the signal when launching a game or DVD in Game OS, but cycling the input selection fixes that; it doesn't fix the YDL installer. What in the world is going on, and how do I fix it?

edit: I just saw it again while running Geoff's kboot-20080609.bld, but petitboot-0.2 seems fine.
